Mycodiversity of nature reserves in Central Italy

100%
Seven nature reserves situated in the province of arezzo (Tuscany, Central italy), presenting various habitats, plants and animals of comunitary interest according to the Habitat Directive, have been observed from a myco-floristic viewpoint. A synthesis of the results on fungal investigations is given. Interesting the finding of rare species such as Ramariopsis pulchellaand Mycena diosma.
Seed banks play a key role in the recruitment of forest vegetation after severe disturbance, but can originate an undesired plant community. Thus, investigations on seed bank structure, and early changes occurring after clearcut, are of primary interest for sustainable forest management. Researches were carried out in two mature stone pine (Pinus pinea L.) plantations located in Tuscany (Italy), along the Mediterranean coast. Soil samples were collected in March, July and October of the 2nd and 3rd year after clear-cut, in cut strips and adjacent intact stands. Seed bank size and composition were evaluated through the number of seedlings and species emerged from soil samples. Intact plantations differed in seed bank richness and composition, but not in abundance that was approximately 1,200 seeds m–2. Clear-cut doubled seed density in soil, did not change seed bank richness, and affected markedly composition. Seed banks of cut strips were richer in annual and open space species, and poorer in perennial, forest and disturbed sites species. Seeds of Erica scoparia dominated the seed bank, with a relative abundance of 60% in intact stands and 43% in cut strips. Proportion of annual seeds was slightly less than 20% in intact stands, but increased up to 50% after clear-cut. Between the 2nd and 3rd year from clear-cut, the proportion of seeds from species typical of stone pine forests decreased, while that of non-forest species and aliens increased. The scarcity of seeds from most forest species and the lack of tree seeds make the recruitment of understorey vegetation from seed banks critical. In addition, the increased seed density of alien and disturbed site species in intact seed banks with time from clear-cut, suggests that disturbance caused by cutting in narrow strips threatens the integrity of intact plantations.
The study considered two ecologically similar coastal areas in Tuscany (Italy). One site belongs to a protected natural area and the other one is in front of a camping site. We analysed the impact of human activities, such as trampling and mechanical beach cleaning, on Talitrus saltator. It turned out that the population density was affected in that it first disappeared from the area at the camping site, then recolonised it once the peak of the tourist season at the camping site had passed. The results confirm the sensitivity of this species and its plasticity in adapting to different conditions on the one hand, and the positive effects of diversification in resource management on the other hand.
To assess the current ecosystem status of Montedoglio Reservoir and surrounding waters, the fish fauna has been analysed in 1993, about five years after the first experimental impoundment. Total number of 898 fishes of fifteen species have been collected of the total biomass of 117 kg. The most abundant species were pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus), goldfish (Carassius auratus L.), bleak (Alburnus alburnus alborella De Fil.), largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides Lac.), rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus L.), and chub (Leuciscus cephalus L.), while the three: Carp (Cyprinus carpio L.), goldfish, and largemouth bass accounted for the most biomass. Of the most common species, carp, chub, largemouth bass and rudd provided insight into population structure and growth. In 1992, a year of heavy spring rains and a rapid water exchange, a year-class abundance across all species was particularly poor. The results of water levels and outflows between 1992-1994 showed a high degree of instability of the system. It appeared to favour fish species depositing their eggs inshore (i.e. chub) and predators (i.e. largemouth bass), while species with life stages feeding on plankton or benthos were not favoured.
The research presented here seeks to describe the impact of wild boar to a natural truffle ground of Tuber aestivum Vittad. on Monte Amiata (Tuscany – Italy). Pedoclimatic analyses indicated that the selected area could be considered suitable for the truffle production. Then classification of the vegetation of a Quercus cerris forest was carried out exploring the possibility of the BACI (Before-After-Control-Impact) sampling design. Finally 10 plots were selected, half of which have been fenced. For the first time the impact of wild boar was evaluated by estimating the surface area turned over by its activity. Moreover in each plot the number and weight of summer truffles was performed every 10 days during the fruiting period (June-November 2006-2008). The hypothesis that the presence of Sus scrofa has a strong negative influence on truffle harvesting has been amply confirmed by the data presented here, given the large increase of fruiting bodies of the summer truffle collected in the fenced plots. Consequently the destructive behaviour of the wild boar imply not only an ecological but also an economic damage in areas in which non-wood forest products are an important source of income.
