The objective of the work was to determine the content of magnesium in plants of Trifolium pratense L. which grew in an environment contaminated with aluminium or copper. The growth and development of the plants was carried out in hydroponics, with strictly controlled composition and pH of the growth medium. Copper was added to the medium (as an additional application) in a solution of CuSO4·5H2O, and aluminium in the form of a solution of AlCl3, at concentrations of Al+3 and Cu+2 of 20 and 100 mg dm-3. The concentration of magnesium, aluminium and cooper was determined by means of a ICP sequential emission spectrometer D-820 Hilger Analytical (UK) in extracts from the roots and aboveground parts. Decreasing pH of the medium did not cause any statistically significant changes in the concentration of the metals studied. There was a significant increase in the concentration of aluminium and copper in roots and aboveground parts of Trifolium pratense L. and lower magnesium concentration for plants that were grown in an environment contaminated with Al+3/ Cu+2 at a concentration of 100 mg dm-3. In the lower concentrations of both stressors (20 mg dm-3) a decrease was noted in the level of magnesium in the whole plant, and a statistically significant increase in the concentration of aluminium and copper in the roots of Trifolium pretense L. In the aboveground parts of the plants that grew in me-dium supplemented with 20 mg dm-3 of Al+3/Cu+2, the increase of the concentration of these metals was not statistically significant.
Anthocyanin spot on the leaves of red clover is inherited independently of light spot and uniform leaf colour. The gene determining anthocyanin spot is probably localized on the other chromosome than the gene determining light spot on the leaves. A short flower tube is also determined by a single recessive gene of a pleiotropic action. It simultaneously causes reduction of pistil style, thickening of the endothecium layer in anthers - entails their indehiscence, pollen grain-agglutination and often deformation, no division of part of pollen grains into a vegetative and generative cells as well as germination of single grains in pollen sacks. The changes in the structure of endothecium and pollen grains cause almost complete male and female infertility of plants with short flower tubes.
Celem podjętych badań była ocena zawartości mikroelementów w koniczynie łąkowej nawożonej nawozami mineralnymi. Doświadczenie połowę, obejmowało pięć obiektów tj.: I. kontrola, II. Ca, III. PK, IV. PK + Ca, V. NPK + Ca. W badaniach własnych stwierdzono wyższe pobranie badanych pierwiastków przez koniczynę łąkową w pierwszym roku badań, w porównaniu do drugiego okresu wegetacji.
Spring 1997 as result considerable reductions of species, executed oversowing of sward dominated by Dactylis glomerata and Bromus inermis with Trifolium pratense var. 'Hruszowska' seeds. Sward cutted 2 and 3 times and used diverse nitrogen fertilization (0,60, 120 kg ha⁻¹ N). Results of investigations showed, that sward 3 times cutting yielding higher. Nitrogen fertilization caused significant increase of yielding and eliminated legumes plant from sward. Objects fertilised with 120 kg ha⁻¹ N participation of legumes was 3-16%.
W latach 1993-1995 przeprowadzono ścisłe doświadczenie terenowe nad wykorzystaniem Trifolium pratense L. do siewu bezpośredniego.
16-chromosome forms of red clover (2n=14+2) were crossed to six Trifolium species with the chromosome number 2n=16. Hybrid plants were derived from the cross of a stable 16-chromosome red clover T. pratense with T. diffusum (2n=16). No seeds were obtained from reciprocal crosses. F₁ hybrid plants were morphologically more similar to T. diffusum, whereas their other characters, e.g. flower number per head, were intermediate between the species crossed. All F₁ hybrids had the chromosome number 2n=16. Meiosis proceeded with large irregularities. The average number of bivalents per cell was 3.32, and that of univalents - 9.98. Univalents exhibited a high stickiness and frequently formed "end-to-end" configurations and chains consisting of about a dozen of so chromosomes. Bivalents were straight. Lagging chromosomes and chromosome bridges were observed during AI; lagging chromosomes were also found during AII. After an equalizing division, tetrads and different from them microspore polyads were formed. 16-chromosome hybrids were male- and female-sterile. No hybrids were obtained from the stable 16-chromosome red clover T. pratense (n=7 chromosomes) crossed to the selected clover species (T. apertum Bobr., T. alexandrinum L. and others) with n=8 chromosomes.
After duplicating the chromosome number by colchicine in sterile F₁ 16-chromosome hybrid T. pratense × T. diffusum some partially fertile plants with 32 chromosomes were found. Male fertility (viability of pollen grain) was from 69.3% to 86.2% (on average 81.8%), whereas female fertility estimated as seed setting after cross- and self-pollination was 21.8% and 6.9%, respectively. Male and female fertility as well as somatic chromosome number were examined in the F₂-F₄ generations. Selection for female fertility resulted in increasing seed setting in the first two generations (F₂ and F₃) and in decreasing it in F₄ generation. An average seed setting in the F₂-F₄ generations after cross-pollination amounted to 22.2%, 43.6% and 12.9%, respectively; after self-pollination it was 25.2%, 27.6% and 1.9%. In the F₂ generation all the plants had 2n=32 chromosomes. In the next generations there appeared aneuploids, among which 30-chromosome individuals were predominant.
Two red clover breeding strains with elongated flower heads, developed by authors (H. G ó r a l), were studied for forage and seed yield and compared to d cultivar 'Nike'. In addition, six morphological shoot traits were measured interrelations were computed. The leaf area index (LAI) of successive cuts in two harvest years was determined on the basis of shoot density and leaf area of individual shoots. All three genotypes exhibited a high leaf area on shoots and a very high productivity. Among the morphological traits only shoot height could be a good selective criterion because it is easily measured, is significantly associated, weight and shoot leaf area and its variation is low. Both strains, particularly fu longer inflorescences belong to short-lived red clover forms giving satisfactory forage and seed yields in the first harvest year. Depending on the strain the seeds per elongated inflorescence in the first harvest year was higher by compared to that of a standard cultivar.
In the process of hybridization and selection for a high number of seeds in (lower heads within red clover population of shortened corolla tube a characteristic phenotype of elongated inflorescences was isolated. On the average these inflorescences were longer than the normal ones by 76 percent. Flower head length was associated with the number of florets per head (r = 0.676** and 0.762** in two seasons) which resulted in an increased number of seeds per head. The correlation coefficients between the number of florets and seeds per head amounted to 0.888** and 0.854** in two seasons. The plants with elongated inflorescences had a reduced number of flower beads and exhibited a lower seed setting per 100 florets which resulted in |he seed yield per plant comparable to the check cultivar (cv. Nike). The new phenotype represents a new source of variation which may be used in breeding programs aiming at improvement of seed yield in red clover.
In experiments located in Prusy (Kraków voivodship) at Wierzbica (Katowice voivodship) at the end of vegetative growth in the fall 6 empiricaly determined features characterizing young red clever plants grown in pure stand and undersown in spring barley were analysed. These were following features refering to a single plant: fresh and dry weight, the length of tops and roots, diameter of the root crown and number of shoots. Based on these features 4 indirect indicators were constructed. In 1993-1994 total of 420 plants were analysed. For direct and indirect indicators means and standard deviations were callculated taking into account the influence of given year, location and method of sowing. Least squares and phenotypic correlations between investigated features were also evaluated. In 1994 average values for analysed plant features of red clever were higher than in 1993. The effect of location (of the experiment) was not visible. Better plants were formed when red clever was undersown in spring barley than when grown in pure stand (without the cover crop). Alls features measured directly showed very high variability between these features were observed. Correlation between the fresh and dry weight need to be emphasized. Also interactions between years and method of sowing, and between location and method of sowing turned out to be significant.
The purpose of this study was to determine the inheritance of white flowers in plants isolated from the short corolla tube population of red clover and to compare seed yield components in plants with white and red flowers. In progenies from intercrossing of short corolla tube plants and their crosses with individual plants of cv. Nike, several percent of plants had white flowers. This trait was controlled by one recessive gene. White flowered plants exhibited normal vigour and seed set, but produced a lower number of flower heads per plant as compared to cv. Nike plants. White flower trait may serve as a marker in genetic and breeding studies. Its usefulness is limited, however, by late manifestation during the development.
