Captures of the slender sunfish, Ranzania laevis, are reported off the coastline of the cities of Sohar and Seeb, Oman Sea, Sultanate of Oman in February and March 2009. Their association with the environmental factors such as warming process is discussed.
The Lessepsian invasive fish, Lagocephalus suezensis was recorded for the first time in the eastern part of the Libyan coast, adding a new invasive species to the 16 Lessepsian species recorded in the Libyan waters.
Parasitological examination of the freshwater fish Tetraodon palembangensis Bleeker (Tetraodontidae, Tetraodontiformes) (n = 19), imported along with other ornamental fishes from Thailand into the Czech Republic in October 1998, revealed the presence of male specimens of the nematode Dichelyne (Dichelyne) hartwichi Moravec, Wolter et Körting, 1999 (Cucullanidae) (prevalence 11%, intensity 1). Their detailed study using light and scanning electron microscopy (the latter used for the first time in this species) enabled the redescription of this hitherto little-known species and the recognition of considerable morphological and biometrical intraspecific variability. The finding of this species in T. palembangensis represents a new host record.
Diploproctodaeum monstrosum sp. nov. is described from Arothron stellatus and A. mappa from off Lizard Island, northern Great Barrier Reef. It differs from its congeners in having a body-length ventral scoop. Diploproctodaeum triodoni sp. nov. is described from Triodon macropterus off New Caledonia. It is distinguished by the extensive vitelline fields usually reaching to the ventral sucker and the folded scoop margins. Other related species are reported from new hosts or localities and dimensions are supplied for: Diploproctodaeum haustrum from Aluterus monoceros off New Caledonia; Diploproctodaeum arothroni from Arothron hispidus off Lizard Island and Ningaloo Reef, northern Western Australia, A. nigropunctatus off Lizard Island and Arothron manilensis off New Caledonia; Diploproctodaeum macracetabulum from Abalistes stellatus on the Swain Reefs, southern Great Barrier Reef and off New Caledonia; Diploproctodaeum momoaafata from Ostracion cubicus off Lizard Island; Diploproctodaeum rutellum from Platax teira off Heron Island, southern Great Barrier Reef; Diploproctodaeoides longipygum from Abalistes stellatus on the Swain Reefs and off New Caledonia; Diplocreadium tsontso from Balistoides conspicillum off Heron Island; Bianium arabicum from Lagocephalus sceleratus off New Caledonia. Attention is drawn to apparent convergent evolution in the body form of several families of trematodes infecting tetraodontids and especially species of Arothron.
Investigations conducted off the northern Tunisian coast (central Mediterranean) allowed the authors to collect a male of the unicorn leatherjacket filefish, Aluterus monoceros (L.). The specimen is described in this note, including morphometric measurements and meristic counts. This finding constitutes the first record of A. monoceros off the Tunisian coast and the second record for the Mediterranean Sea. The occurrence of this species in the area and the Mediterranean Sea is discussed and commented.
A second record of the small Indo-Pacific fish Tylerius spinosissimus (Tetraodontidae) (known as spiny blaasop) was documented at the beginning of 2009 in the waters of Rhodes Island (south-eastern Aegean Sea, Greece). The finding shows the putative establishment of a population of this alien fish in the Mediterranean with a centre the Dodecanese plateau.
