The study focuses on the fauna and its aim was to prepare a register of mesostigmatid mites reported from the Tatra National Park. The register was prepared on the basis of literature and the author’s own research conducted in the park. The study describes 115 mite species from the order Mesostigmata reported from the Tatra National Park. The most numerous were families Parasitidae (27 species) and Zerconidae (14).
The European wildcat Felis silvestris silvestris is one of the most endangered mammals in Poland. In 1954, when the Tatra National Park (TNP) was established in the highest part of the Polish Carpathians, the wildcat was considered a rare species but nevertheless present in this region. However, its occurrence was never properly recorded there. The aim of this study was to verify whether wildcats occur in the TNP using genetic methods to distinguish wildcats from domestic cats F. s. catus. Between March and May 2015, hair samples were collected from 40 lure sticks treated with valerian, a cat attractant, in a region of the park with presumed high habitat suitability for wildcats. Neither wildcats nor hybrids with domestic cats were identified using control region haplotype sequencing and analysis of different nuclear markers. However, thirteen samples indicating the presence of the domestic cat in the protected area were collected. The Bayesian clustering analyses of microsatellite and SNP genotypes revealed no evidence for any admixture with wildcats. While our study cannot prove the absence of wildcats in the study area, it strongly suggests that wildcats are at least very rare in the region and a continued rigorous monitoring is recommended.
All available published data on the occurrence of Russula species in Tatra National Park are summarized. Excluding the doubtful data, which are discussed herein, 66 species are recognized in Tatra National Park. Within each of the three main geomorphological units of the range, 42 species were recorded in the West Tatras, 18 in the High Tatras, and 16 in the Belanske Tatry Mts; additionally, 35 species were found in areas outside the Tatra Mts but within the National Park borders. Montane forests are the richest in Russula species (58); 13 species were found in the subalpine and 8 in the alpine belt. The number of reported species is highest in the Polish part of the West Tatra Mts; almost no data are available from the Slovak High Tatras. The smallest unit, the Belanske Tatry Mts, is the Tatra region best studied for alpine species. In comparison to other regions in Poland and Slovakia, Tatra National Park seems to be relatively well investigated, but in view of the richness of habitats in the Tatra Mts, we believe the actual diversity of Russula species in the region is higher than presently known.
The chemical composition of surface water and groundwater is subject to constant changes, which result primarily from meteorological factors (for instance, size and intensity of atmospheric precipitation), hydrological factors (for instance, the degree of hydration of the mountain massif and changes in river flows), and geological-lithological factors (the type of bedrock). The aim of the present research was to examine the hydrological and chemical regime of surface and underground waters in the Bystra and Sucha Woda mountain stream catchments. Between December 2013 and December 2016, 77 series of measurements were collected at the rhythm of twice a month (n = 611 water samples) from 8 sites, which represented both surface waters (watercourses, ponds) and underground waters (karst springs). The studied area possesses very distinct geological duality. The southern part is a crystalline region, and the northern part is made up of sedimentary rocks. During the field studies, the following have been measured: water levels of the watercourses, flow rates, and physicochemical characteristics of water, such as electrical conductivity, pH and water temperature. At the same time, water samples were collected for laboratory analyses, which included general mineralization and concentrations of Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, HCO₃⁻, SO₄²⁻, Cl⁻, NH₄⁺, PO₄³⁻, NO₃⁻, Li⁺, Br⁻i F⁻ions. The geological structure had the greatest impact on the chemical composition of waters in the Bystra stream and Sucha Woda stream catchments. The waters representing the crystalline region were characterized by significantly lower total mineralization, lower specific electrical conductivity, and lower ion concentration than water in the crystalline-sedimentary (karst) region. The average value of total mineralization in the crystalline region was 14.3 mg · dm⁻³, and in the crystalline-sedimentary region – 81.2 mg · dm⁻³. The waters in the crystalline region were characterized by a demonstrably lower pH (average pH of 6.5) than the water in the karst region (average pH of 7.7). Low values of mineralization, electrical conductivity and concentration of main ions were accompanied by increased flows during the summer and autumn. In all the waters subjected to testing, there was also a marked decrease in the value of these parameters during the spring thaw. In the feeding of streams and karst springs during this time, slightly mineralized melt-waters had their significant share. In spring, there was also the greatest variation in the chemical composition of the studied waters. This variability was clearly lower in the lower Bystra karst spring than in the Goryczkowa karst string. It was most likely related to a different rate of melt-water inflow to the two karst springs. In all the tested waters, the highest values of total mineralization, electrical conductivity and concentration of main ions occurred during the winter low discharge, which resulted from the predominance of underground feed in the river’s runoff. In all the studied waters, a clear decrease in NO₃⁻ concentration was observed during the summer and autumn months. Most probably, this was associated with increased NO₃⁻ uptake by plants during the growing season. In the waters of streams draining the crystalline part of the Bystra stream catchment there was clearly lower nitrate concentration than in the Bystra stream waters draining the crystalline-sedimentary (karst) part. The chemical composition of the Bystra stream water, draining the crystalline-sedimentary (karst) part of the catchment, was strictly dependent on the chemical composition of groundwater from the Goryczkowy and lower Bystra karst springs.
Three species of the genus Psathyrella are described and illustrated in the paper. one of them: P. hydrophiloides is new to Poland, while two others: P. conopilus and P. murcida are new to the Polish Carpathians
This paper presents the results of determination of artificial 137cs and natural 40K activity concentrations and some heavy metals in soil samples from the region of one of the main valleys of Tatra National Park (Chochołowska). Our investigation concentrated on 137Cs and heavy metal levels in mountain soil taken from Chochołowska Valley, which revealed great variability in their concentration. The results show con­siderably small amounts of radionuclides 137cs and 40K in the soils. Larger amounts of those elements can be found in the organic surface horizons of the soils. The evaluation of the content of those elements must be based on the bulk density analysis of the soil.
Bark beetle outbreaks and tree mortality patterns should be better understood to control outbreak impacts. We investigated landscape-level patterns of Norway spruce mortality caused by Ips typographus outbreaks across three periods from 1999–2012 in Tatra National Park (Poland) using high-resolution aerial orthophotos and satellite imagery. Shifts in tree mortality related to elevation, slope, and solar equinox radiation were analyzed with ANOVAs (Tukey's HSD tests). Boosted regression trees were employed to assess the forecasting effectiveness of these variables related to mortality period. Spruce mortality severity increased significantly across time in both managed and unmanaged forests. Management activities did not effectively reduce spruce mortality severity. Mortality severity increased significantly at higher elevations over time, while slope and radiation trends varied. Elevation and radiation were the best forecasters of mortality period, exhibiting moderate predictive ability. Beetle-induced spruce mortality increased significantly in Tatra National Park from 1999–2012, particularly at high elevations. Management strategies aimed at minimizing spruce mortality have been ineffective.

Food composition of the red fox Vulpes vulpes (Linnaeus, 1758) was analysed on the basis of 144 scats found in the Tatra National Park (1270-2100 m a.s.l.), Poland. The most important kind of food were small and medium mammals (54% and 43%, respectively). Pine voles were the staple food in the group of determined small mammals, within determined medium mammals the most important was the marmot. Refuse left by tourists occured in every sixth scat. Most intensively used by foxes were habitats situated at the altitude of 1401-1600 m a.s.l., probably due to favourable food and shelter conditions offered by this zone.
