The study contains the results of the investigations conducted over a period of many years on the biodiversity of insect fauna of firs in strict and partial reserves of the Świętokrzyski and Roztoczański National Parks. The species structure of individual functional groups of insects was analysed, together with their role in the ecosystem and their influence on the course of natural ecological processes in the environment, depending on the health of the host plant. The degree of similarity was determined for the species composition of insect fauna found in the analysed areas of the parks. A considerable biological and scientific role which has been played for several decades by strict reserves has been stressed. The reserves are indispensable for the creation of appropriate conditions for the development and survival of insect species of great natural value, being rare in the fauna of fir stands at the north-eastern limits of the natural range of this tree species.
Taking into account high organic matter content in the orchid reserve soils of the Roztoczański National Park, the present authors tried to adapt the method worked out by Rice-Evans and Miller to estimate a soil extract antioxidant activity. This method is used to compare antioxidant activity of complex substances with various organic compounds. The method corroborated the occurrence of antioxydation substances in the tested soil samples.
The objective of the present study was to assess the risk of borreliosis and anaplasmosis (ehrlichiosis) among the forestry workers of the Roztocze National Park (south-eastern Poland) by examination of Ixodes ricinus ticks living in park area with PCR method, and by the serological and clinical examination of the workers. In 406 examined ticks, the prevalence of infection with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato was 11.5%. The nested PCR reaction for determining the genospecies showed that the most common was Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto (55.3% of total positive) followed by Borrelia afzelii (38.3%). As many as 6.1% out of 115 examined ticks showed the presence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum DNA. The infection rate was high in males and females (14.3% and 11.1% respectively) and low in nymphs (1.5%). In 46 out 113 examined forestry workers (40.7%) the presence of specific IgG and/or IgM antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato was found in ELISA test, while only 4 out of 56 urban blood donors showed a positive response (p<0.0001).The prevalence of IgG antibodies against Anaplasma phagocytophilum determined with the use of indirect immunofluorescence test (IFA) was 17.7% in forestry workers compared to 5.4% in reference group of blood donors (p<0.05). No correlation was found between the presence of antibodies to A. phagocytophilum and to B. burgdorferi s. l. Clinical investigations of 113 forestry workers showed 3 cases of borreliosis (2.7%) and no cases of anaplasmosis (ehrlichiosis). In conclusion, forestry workers of the Roztocze National Park in south-eastern Poland are often exposed to Ixodes ricinus ticks infected with Borrelia burgdorferi and Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and show a high proportion of asymptomatic borreliosis and anaplasmosis (ehrlichiosis) manifested by a positive serologic response, while the number of clinical cases is relatively low.
The aitn of the research was to evaluate the influence of the metallurgy-sulphur railroad (LHS) on some soil properties of the Roztoczański National Park. Special attention was paid to sulphur risks, due to sulphur transport that way, although in smaller quantities as compared to the previous decade. The study Was based on the analysis of basic properties of selected soils and content of total and sulphate sulphur in soif samples taken in 2 cross-section profiles, located 400 and 900 m from the border of the Park and 50, 100, and 150 m from the rails; from 3 levels of forest soils; litter, 0-10 cm, and 30-40 em. Pedological survey indicated that within the study area predominated light soils. They are derived from river sands (mainly gley, gley-podzolic, podzolic soils, and black earth), and contain low amounts of the fine fraction. It was found that the line, which runs across the protected areas of the national park, does not exert nowadays a direct negative influence on the investigated soil properties (C-organic, reaction, mobile aluminium). The amount of total and /sulphate sulphur reniainjjon the level characteristic for such soil types in natural environment. No decrease in the content of both forms of sulphur was found along with the distance of sampling points from the LHS rails.
