The paper presents a table consisting of 16 releves of aspen forest Agrostio-Populetum tremulae, recorded in Puszcza Bukowa (Beech Forest) near Szczecin. The observations concerning the topographical preferences of such type of ecosystems, and the remarks about their role in the secondary succession are also given.
The Western Pomerania is among better studied regions of Poland with respect to natural history. This is evidenced by the number of zoological publications pertaining to that area (Urbański, 1958). Until now (in spite of its being situated close to a large academic centre of Szczecin) no entomological monograph has been devoted to the Puszcza Bukowa forest - one of the most valuable and best preserved areas of the region. This paper, a part of a larger cycle devoted to the studies on selected insect taxa carried out in 1987-1991 (Buchholz, 1993; Buchholz, Bunalski, Nowacki, 1993; Bunalski, 1993; Kubisz, 1993; Nowacki, 1993), presents a concise geomorphological, climatic and phytosociological characteristics of the area. Puszcza Bukowa near Szczecin, since 1981 a landscape park, is situated on a belt of moraine hills, geomorphologically much diversified. It forms a dense complex, mostly of deciduous forests, of a total area of c. 9000 ha. Among woodland plant communities the following dominate: Melico-Fagetum as several phytosociological variants, Fago-Quercetum petraeae, Mercuriali-Fagetum and Luzulo pilosae-Fagetum. A smaller area is occupied by alder carrs, riverine forests, mixed forests and other plant communities. Many fragments of woodland communities in the Puszcza Bukowa forest are close to natural (Celiński, 1962). Five nature reserves of a total area of over 450 ha are situated there, in principle their objective being to protect forest ecosystems. A very important factor influencing the ecosystems of the studied area is a typically atlantic climate, unique in Poland, and specific hydrological conditions (high annual precipitation, numerous springs, flowing waters, vaucluses) resulting from its climate and geomor- phology. In the paper the main studied localities (nature reserves, the largest and oldest non-forest area - meadow „Polana Kotowska" and neighbourhood of some forester's cottages and keeper's houses close to which light traps for insects were installed) are characterized with respect to their nature; methods of collecting material are presented, the most important being: colleting from vegetation (among others sweeping with entomological net), searching possible places of development, use of natural and artificial baits.
An outline of biocenotic significance of the studied insect taxa and possibilities to use them as bioindicators of changes in woodland ecosystems resulting from economic activities are presented. Puszcza Bukowa forest (NW Poland) is potentially unusually valuable as a refuge area for zoocenoses associated with forests of atlantic climate, unique in Poland. The studied insect associations are strongly affected, both with respect to their species composition and population structure of some component species. The degradation is most markedly expressed as reduced biodiversity. The main resons for this result from economic activity. An array of actions and abandoning some ingerence (at least in areas under reserve protection) are necessary to inhibit degradation processes in the ecosystems of the Puszcza Bukowa and to enable a natural reconstitution of its biocenoses.
204 noctuid species are recorded from the Puszcza Bukowa forest near Szczecin. Localities, period of appearance of imagines and abundance on a 5-grade scale are given for each species.
Based on author’s own studies (1987-1991) in the Puszcza Bukowa forest near Szczecin (NW Poland), species of the follwing families are listed from the area: Scarabaeidae (s. str.) - 20 species, Trogidae - 1, Geotrupidae - 3, Melolonthidae - 3, Rutelidae - 1, Lucanidae - 3. Onthophagus coenobita (Hbst.), Aphodius haemorrhoidalis (L.), A. rufipes (L.), A. ater (DE GEER) and Platycerus caraboides (L.) are recorded from the Pomeranian Lake District for the first time.
Twenty four species of the families Hydrophilidae, Anobiidae, Cyphonidae, Heteroceridae, Dermestidae, Melyridae, Silvanidae, Phalacridae, Nitidulidae, Lathridiidae, Erotylidae, Melandryidae, Oedemeridae and Tenebrionidae recorded from the Puszcza Bukowa forest (NW Poland) are discussed.
In deciduous forests (mainly Melico-Fagetum and Fago-Quercetum petraeae) of the central part of the Puszcza Bukowa (NW Poland) 19 species of Elateridae, 1 of Eucnemidae and 1 of Throscidae were found. Besides, outside the area under detailed investigation (in agrocenoses, on fens among cultivated fields, in mixed forests), 6 more elaterid species were collected. Old data on the occurrence of Denticollis rubens and Stenagostus villosus - rare species, characteristic of large natural woodlands - in the Western Pomerania were confirmed. The following species are new to the Pomeranian Lake Region: Pseudathous hirtus, Anostirus castaneus, Ampedus rufipennis, Agriotes acuminatus. The studied area is poor with respect to its fauna of Elateroidea, the main reason being forest management, even in nature reserves.
