Myrmecophilous Parasitengona (Acari: Prostigmata) - accident or adaptation?

Hitherto data on ecological relations between terrestrial Parasitengona mites and ants are summarized and supplemented with the characteristics of two observed cases, which confirm the specific feeding adaptations of some Erythraeidae. Altogether, 21 species representing six Parasitengona families have been recorded as displaying permanent, temporary or accidental relationship with ants. Of those only the parasitic larvae of Forania mentonensis (André, 1929), F. sendrai Mayoral et Barranco, 2010, Makolia crimeaensis Saboori, Khaustov et Hakimitabar, 2009, Leptus clarki Southcott, 1989 and L. debeauforti (Oudemans, 1905) may be regarded as specialists. The verified diagnosis of M. crimeaensis, based on the material originating from Crimea (Ukraine) is proposed.

Balaustium murorum (Hermann, 1804) is redescribed. Characteristics of active postlarval forms and first characteristics of larvae, supplemented with data on biology of the species, are provided. Female of B. murorum, from which larvae were obtained by experimental rearing, has been designated as neotype. Key characters, hitherto used by different authors in order to distinguish between members of Balaustium are discussed. Seventeen species known from larvae are presently assigned to Balaustium, at the total number of 41 members of the genus known worldwide.

Morphology and life cycle of Abrolophus norvegicus (Thor, 1900) with notes on Abrolophus spp. (Actinotrichida: Prostigmata: Erythraeidae)

Abrolophus norvegicus (Thor, 1900) is redescribed. An extended diagnosis of Abrolophus Berlese, 1891 (= Hauptmannia Oudemans, 1910) is provided for all active life instars. Description of larva of A. norvegicus is based on specimens obtained by experimental rearing from field-collected females. Variability of morphological characters is evaluated for offspring of a single female, within a particular population and between different populations originating from Europe. The specific status of A. norvegicus is discussed. A female of A. norvegicus, collected in northern Germany is selected as neotype. Hauptmannia silesiacus Haitiinger, 1986, syn. nov., Abrolophus neobrevicollis Zhang et Goldarazena, 1996, syn. nov., Hauptmannia striata Saboori, Šundic et Pesic, 2011, syn. nov., Hauptmannia dagmarae Haitiinger, 2012, syn. nov. are considered synonyms of Ritteria norvegica Thor, 1900. Data on habitat specificity and phenology of A. norvegicus as well as on its development are given.

A new quill mite species Neoaulonastus grewlingi sp. nov. parasitizing Australian endemic Falcunculus frontatus (Latham) (Passeriformes: Falcunculidae) is described. This new species differs from N. caligatus Skoracki by the following characters: apunctate pygidial shield and coxal fields I–IV, setae c1 1.4 times longer than d1, and lengths of setae ve 20, si 15–25, se 155–175 and c2 145–155. This is the first record of syringophilid mites from hosts of the family Falcunculidae and first register of Neoaulonastus genus in Australian region.
