Distribution of the Potentilla species in the northern part of the Landscape Park “Orle Gniazda” (Silesia-Cracow Upland). Fragmenta Floristica et Geobotanica Polonica 11(2): 263–270. Kraków. PL ISSN 1640-629X. ABSTRACT: The list of 26 taxa of the genus Potentilla found in the northern part of the Landscape Park “Orle Gniazda” (Silesia-Cracow Upland) on 192 localities, mainly in the years 1999–2002 and on the base of a date with literature, was presented. Among them seven rare species in this region: P. intermedia, P. leucopolitana, P. pusilla, P. recta, P. recta subsp. recta, P. thyrsiflora and P. wiemanniana. P. arenaria (25 localities) and P. tabernaemontani (36) are the most common species of the genus on this area.
Electrical conductivity (EC) of stem electrolyte leakage method was used for evaluation of frost hardiness of new cultivars of ornamental shrubs from the three popular in landscape taxa. Eight cultivars of Forsythia, Potentilla and Weigela were planted in the field at the beginning of 2010 in a sandy loam soil of pH 6.4. Stems for electrolyte leakage were collected in the beginning of every month during winter 2012/13. In general, the electrical conductivity (EC) of stem electrolyte leakage of Forsythia and Weigela was much higher than of Potentilla in all terms. Results within each species were more different and depended on cultivar. Forsythia ‘Courtasol’ had the lowest stem electrolytes leakage (mean 41.2 S·m-1) compared to ‘Goldrausch’ (81.3 S·m-1), where damages of flower bud after winter were noted. Within Weigela the lowest stem electrolytes leakage was noted on ‘Verweig’ and ‘Verweig 2’ plants (36.9 and 37.9 S·m-1 respectively), the highest on ‘Caricature’ (72.6 S·m-1). The most winter hardy shrubs occur in Forsythia ‘Courtasol’, Weigela ‘Verweig’ and ‘Verweig 2’, Potentilla ‘Goldfinger’ and ‘Yellow Bird’. Results of this experiment show that EC measurement of stem electrolytes leakage could be a very good, useful and quick method of winter hardiness estimation of new ornamental shrubs introduced to the culture.
controlled release fertilizer (CRF) on mycorrhizal colonization, nutrient acquisition, and growth of Physocarpus opulifolius, Spiraea japónica and Potentilla fruticosa was investigated in a container experiment. The AMF treatments consisted of a commercial inoculum Endorize-Mix and non-inoculated (non- AMF) control. Compost was mixed with peat at different rates (0, 10 and 20% v/v). The CRF was applied at 100 and 50% of the manufacturer's recommended rate. Shoot fresh weights of all three species were affected by mycorrhizas the first year they were grown in containers. Differences between AMF and non-AMF plants were less significant in the second year. In the first year, species growth response to AMF inoculation was positive for P. fruticosa, which was not dependent on CRF rate and compost addition to substrate. Species growth response to AMF inoculation ranged from neutral to negative in the first year for P. opulifolius and S. japonica depending on the CRF rate and compost addition to substrate. Mycorrhiza development was generally supported by increasing the rate of compost in peat substrate and suppressed under the recommended rate of CRF. AMF inoculation affected P content in plant tissue of all species, with a higher P content in AMF than in non-AMF plants, regardless of the rate of CRF. However, the increased level of mycorrhizal colonization caused by AMF inoculum and higher phosphorus content in the leaves of all tested species did not correspond with higher biomass of plants. The greater participation of compost was in peat substrate, the more phosphorus and potassium contained all tested species. Shoot nitrogen content was not affected by AMF nor compost addition to peat substrate.
Indumentum types of the leaves in 31 species of Potentilla L. (Rosaceae) and four related genera, especially Tylosperma Botsch., Schistophyllidium (Juz. ex Fed.) Ikonn., Drymocallis Fourr. ex Rydb., and Sibbaldia L. from Iran were investigated. Indumentum ultrastructure was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM observation revealed three type classes based on leaf indumentum: 1) straight (appressed-erect); 2) straight-erect and crispate, and 3) crispate-floccose. The straight hair character (I type class) is widely distributed among all genera sampled and six sections of Potentilla. In contrast the crispate-floccose indumentum (III type class) is confined to all examined species of sections Speciosae and Pensylvanicae. While some sections especially Rectae (straight and straight-crispate hairs) and Terminales (straight-crispate and floccose-crispate) posses two indumentum type classes. The present survey shows that indumentum types are of systematic importance and may form good key characters for identification purposes.
