A new species of tigonopoid Platynotina (Atrocrates coconatae sp. nov.) is described, diagnosed and illustrated. An update for the key of the genus Atrocrates is proposed.
Basing on the newly described (Ectateus ursynowiensis Kamiński sp. nov.) and the type species a new taxonomical hypothesis of the genus Ectateus is proposed. Due to the rules of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature following changes are made: designation of the lectotype for E. modestus (Fairmaire, 1887) and replacement name for the genus Cosmogaster Koch, 1956.
Pseudoselinus zambiaiensis sp. nov, a new species from Africa is described, illustrated and compared with its relatives. Key to the species of Pseudoselinus and distribution are provided.
The genus Phallocentrion Koch, 1956 (type species: Selinus edentatus Gebien, 1914) of the anchophthalmoid Platynotina is revised and illustrated. Two new species are described: Phallocentrion gussmannae and Ph. wanati. Lectotype and paralectotypes are designated for Selinus edentatus Gebien, 1914. Key for species determination is provided.
Quadrideres luigii, new species from Kenya is described, illustrated and compared with their relatives. Lectotype and paralectotypes are designated for Selinus femineus Lesne, 1922.
The female genital structure of the genus Bantodemus Koch, 1955 is studied. The variability in the shape of sclerites in the bursa copulatrix is illustrated based on the species B. montanus. Two new species are described: B. durbaniensis sp. nov. and B. harmonius sp. nov. Separate keys for species determination are compiled for males and females. New localities data for B. caffer, B. furcatus, B. montanus, B. rudebecki, B. tristis are provided.
The catalogue of all known species of the melanocratoid lineage of the subtribe Platynotina Koch, 1953 is presented. Eight genera containing 30 species are listed. The data of primary and secondary types is provided. Distribution of the species is listed and illustrated on 9 maps. New distributional data is published for: Melanocratus fairmairei Iwan, 1996, M. validipes Fairmaire, 1895, Sebastianus madagascariensis Iwan, 1999, S. magnus Iwan, 1996, S. ovoideus (Fairmaire, 1902), S. projectus Iwan, 1996, Styphacus girardi Iwan, 2004 and S. phreneticus Iwan, 1996. The relationship between species richness and Malagasy ecoregions is analysed and discussed. MaxEnt software was used to model the hypothetical range of chosen species and indicate the most important abiotic factors responsible for observed distribution. Results of MaxEnt analysis suggest that the precipitation has the major limiting impact from all of analysed factors.
An X-ray microtomographic analysis of the prothoracic skeleton structure of seven Platynotina species is presented. The investigated taxa represent different morphological types of pronotal discs. Tenebrio molitor was used as a reference model to all taxonomie considerations. The anatomical evidence gathered and analyzed in this study indicates that lateral indentations of nota, which are visible in most of the Ectateus generic group representatives, corresponds with a placement of the attachments of the pleural apophyses to the bottom of pronotal disc. Therefore, they should be defined as the apophyseal depressions. Furthermore, the main observed differences between the thoracic structure of the species with conspicuous apophyseal depressions and convex pronotal nota concerns the height of the pronotal disc and the elevation of its edges. The current investigations did not revealed any significant modifications of the endoskeletal structure between the prothoraces with or without the basal indentations. The study shows that X-ray microtomographic analysis is a powerful, non-destructive tool for the taxonomie considerations and that it can be safely applied to the name-bearing types. Furthermore, the application of this method, even to the dried entomological material, may provide many advantages over traditional morphological investigations.
The catalogue of all known species of the Afrotropical platynotoid lineage of the subtribe Platynotina Mulsant et Rey, 1853 is presented. Twenty one genera containing 127 species (132 subspecies) are listed. The data of primary and secondary types is provided. Based on the article 45.6.4. of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature Opatrinus edentatus Koch, 1956 and O. pinheyi Koch, 1956 are consider as unavailable names. Distribution of the species is listed and illustrated on 152 maps. The relationship between species richness and Afrotropical ecoregions is analyzed and discussed. MaxEnt software was used to model the hypothetical range of chosen species.
The taxonomie and distributional data concerning the representatives of the Quadrideres interioris species-group were revised. Lectotypes for Q. interioris (Gebien, 1911), Q. lesnei Koch, 1956 and Q. volcanicus Koch, 1956 were designated. Q. kaszabi sp. nov. and Q. rex sp. nov. were described. An identification key is provided to all known species of the Q. interioris species-group. This paper brings the total species number within the genus Quadrideres to 18.
Two new species of the genus Anchophthalmops Koch, 1956: A. bartolozzii sp. nov. and A. uhligi sp. nov. from East Africa are described and illustrated. The distribution map is presented.
Malagasy species Clastopus aberlenci sp. nov. (female and the first-stage larva), of the melanocratoid Platynotina is described and illustrated. The diagnostic characters of the known first-stage larvae are presented. Key determination for all known species of the genus is provided.
First stage larve of ovoviviparous tenebrionid beetles (melanocratoid Platynotina, Platynotini) from Madagascar are described and illustrated: Sebastianus simplex Iwan, S. projectus Iwan, Styphacus bartolozzi Iwan, S. kochi Iwan, Melanocratus ferreri Iwan. Viviparity in beetles (Carabidae, Chrysomelidae, Micromalthidae, Staphylinidae and Tenebrionidae) is discussed.
The genus Platykochius Iwan, 2002 (type species: Selinus platessa Fairmaire, 1887) of Ectateus group is revised and illustrated. Two new species are described: Platykochius loebli and P. triplehorni. Lectotype and paralectotypes are designated for Selinus platessa Fairmaire, 1887. Key for species determination is provided.
The species of the African genus Pseudoselinus Iwan, 2002 (type species: Eurynotus punctatostriatus Gerstaecker, 1854) are revised and illustrated. Pseudoselinus is the first time recorded as a member of Ectateus group. The following new synonym is proposed: Opatrinus elevatus Gerstaecker, 1871 (=Selinus lundbladi Koch, 1956). Key to the species of Pseudoselinus and distribution are provided.
A total number of 70 species representing 44 genera of all the subtribes within the tribe Pedinini sensu Iwan 2004 (Dendarina, Eurynotina, Platynotina, Pedinina, Melambiina, Loensina, Leichenina, Pythiopina) have been examined. The terminology of the female genital structures has been standardized. The use of the internal female genitalia in the classification of Tenebrionidae is presented. The features of the opatrinoid type of ovipositor (sensu Tschinkel and Doyen 1980) (1) dorso-lateral position of gonostylus; (2) 4 lobes of coxites; (3) paraproct partly enclosing the 1st lobe of coxite; (4) transverse orientation of baculus of 1st lobe of coxite are characterized for the examined taxa.
