17 meristic and morphometric features were studied in the bleak in the waters of Międzyodrze. Noticeable positive or negative allometry was observed in the growth of head length, horizontal eye diameter, pelvic fins length, body height, and in the distance between pelvic fins and anal fin. In the light of the studied features, the bleak in Międzyodrze places itself in a transitional position between the lake populations and the riverine and estuarine populations.

The age and length distribution of the blue bream spawning population of Międzyodrze-the wetland area in the lower part of the river Odra-was examined in the years 1992-1996. The length and age of sexual maturity was determined, the relative gonads size of mature fish in autumn and spring seasons as well as relationship between fecundity and weight or length of females was assessed.

Growth rate of zander (European pikeperch) was studied in the waters of Międzyodrze-the wetland area situated in the lower course of the River Odra, Poland. The fish, 546 individuals, were caught with fyke-net. Of the total number, 544 zander were aged and 379 were studied for growth rate using back calculations. Edge coefficient, Kr, was used to verify age determination. The linear growth rate of zander was similar to this characteristic of the fish living in adjacent waters in the corresponding period of time, however, clear differences were observed when compared to previous studies in the region, carried out 10 and 20 years before.

Międzyodrze is a giant river island limited by western and eastern (Regalica) branches of the Oder river. Its major part, the Landscape Park of the Lower Oder Valley, is protected. All its area is crisscrossed by a thick net of old river beds, small bodies of water, channels and ditches. It is the largest active European peatland with vegetation which has already disappeared in other estuaries. There is no permanent human settlement in this vast area. The author summarizes field studies aimed at defining the threats to this ecosystem.
