Studies were conducted at the Experimental Station of the Agricultural University of Lublin in the years 1997–2000 the aim of which was to estimate the quality of young trees and the nursery eficiency of cherry trees on 6 stocks: P-HL 84 (A), P-HL 6 (C), Colt, F 12/1, mahaleb cherry (Prunus mahaleb L.) and sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.). The highest percentage of the taken buds was found on P-HL 84, P-HL 6 and F 12/1. The budding of the enumerated stocks every year makes it possible to achieve the greatest nursery efficiency. More than 78% of first quality trees were obtained on stocks Colt and mahaleb cherry. The worst quality cherry trees of cv. ‘Łutówka’ were obtained on vegetative clones P-HL 84 and 6 as well as F 12/1.
The studies were conducted in a nursery of sour cherry ‘Łutówka’ budded on Prunus mahaleb L. in the years 1993, 2000–2003, and 2013. The height of trees, the diameter of stems, and the length of lateral shoots were measured. The air temperature and precipitation higher than the long-term mean (by approximately 10 % and 28%, respectively) contributed to the increase in the stem diameter, the total length of shoots, and the number of shoots per tree. The length of lateral shoots increased from the top of the crown towards the lower parts, however, the number of feathers per tree and the mean length of shoots decreased. A strong positive relationship (r = 0.74, P < 0.05) was revealed between the stem diameter and the total length of shoots. Generally, the correlations between the type of growth of sour cherry maiden trees and morphological traits were similar to those characteristic for apple maiden trees or “knip-boom” type trees.
The present study, carried out in the period 2007-2009 in the Sandomierz Upland, did not show a significant effect of foliar fertilization on trunk thickness and canopy volume in the cultivar Łutówka. However, under the influence of urea applied three times in combination with Florovit at a concentration of 0.5%, a clear increasing trend was observed in the above mentioned parameters used to assess the strength of growth. In years of abundant fruiting, this study showed a significant increase, or on the verge of significance, in yield after threefold application of urea and Florovit in combination. A small insignificant effect of fertilization on fruit weight shows that the growth in yield after the application of fertilization was produced as a consequential effect of a significant increase in the length of one-year shoots and thereby in flowering intensity of the ‘Łutówka’ cherry trees. In the case of the sour cherry cultivar Łutówka bearing fruit on one-year shoots, foliar feeding after flowering using multi-nutrient fertilizers and urea can be recommended as a technological treatment, in particular in years of abundant fruiting.
The strength of growth of ‘Łutówka’ trees was related to the soil quality and the rootstock. Measurements of the tree trunks and the crown size showed that on fertile soil the trees grafted on Mahaleb cherry grew worse, forming by 12% thinner trunks and by over 20% (signifi cantly) smaller crowns as compared to Mazzard cherry trees. On poor sandy-loamy soil the crowns of trees grafted on Mahaleb were signifi cantly, more than 40% bigger than those on Mazzard cherry. No signifi cant differences in the yielding and productivity of trees grafted on Mahaleb and Mazzard cherry trees were found on grey brown podzolic soil. The experiment conducted on sandy-loamy soil pointed to signifi cant differences in the yielding and productivity between ‘Łutówka’ trees grafted on the studied rootstocks. The trees grafted on Mahaleb cherry in both studied years were characterized by signifi cantly greater productivity than on the other rootstocks. Signifi cantly higher yields were gathered from the trees on Mahaleb cherry than on vegetative rootstocks, and by 70% higher than on Mazzard cherry. P-HL A rootstock is of little use in the planting of ‘Łutówka’, which grown poorly on light soils. Besides poor growth and yielding, in longer dry periods the studies found the appearance of chlorosis of magnesium on older leaves, and even wilting of the leaves.
The studies performed in 1997 - 1999 have shown that herbicides such as Azotop 50 (simazine, 6-chloro-N, N-diethyl-l,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine) in the dose 1 kg ha- 1 or Afalon 50 WP (linuron, N'-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)N-methoxy-N-methylurea) in dose 1.5 kg ha-1 or its mixture with Dual 960 EC (metolachlor, 2-chloro- N(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-l-methylethyl) acetamide) in dose 1.5 1 ha-1 applied in early spring significantly decreased number of weeds in nursery of sour cherry trees cv. Lutówka budded on Prunus mahaleb L rootstocks as compared with mechanical weed control. Both, Azotop 50 and Azotop 50 in mixture with Dual 960 EC eliminated weeds for the longer period than Afalon 50 WP and Afalon 50 WP with Dual 960 EC. Herbicides did not affect tree trunk diameter (at 30 cm. from the ground level), the number and total length of shoots of one-year-old sour cherry trees in comparison with mechanical control of weeds.
Trzykrotne usuwanie zielnych pędów syleptycznych powodowało istotne zwiększanie masy liścia w porównaniu do jednorazowego późnego zabiegu. W oparciu o uzyskane wyniki badań w przypadku odmiany ‘Łutówka’ należy polecać do praktyki częste pensowanie zielnych pędów rozpoczynane w okresie utworzenia pierwszych 5-6 pędów syleptycznych. Ten sposób formowania pni jest łatwy w wykonaniu, a pozostawione po pędach zielnych 1-2-centymetrowe czopki żółkną i opadają dając zupełnie gładki pień.
The research was conducted in 2011-2012, at the Experimental Station in Lipnik near Stargard Szczeciński, on soil classified as Haplic Cambisol, with low useful water retention. The experiment was designed with a split-plot method and repeated seven times. Grass cover was maintained in the row middles while the area underneath the trees was kept as herbicide fallow. The trees were planted in 4x2 m spacing. The assessment concerned the influence of irrigation and NK fertilisation on the dry matter and chemical composition of cherry fruit from the cultivars Kelleris 16 and Łutówka. Micro-irrigation was used at water potential in soil lower than 0.01 MPa. According to agronomic recommendations, nitrogen fertilizers were applied in early spring and potassium fertilizers in autumn in the following doses: 0 NK (control, no fertilization), 1 NK – 80 kg.ha-1 (40+40), 2 NK - 160 kg.ha-1(80+80), according to agronomic recommendations. Ammonium nitrate containing 34% of nitrogen and potash salt containing 60% of potassium were used for fertilization. Observations of the irrigated trees showed an increase in the dry mass in their fruit, as well as a decrease in nitrogen, potassium and magnesium concentrations, but an increase in the amount of calcium. Chemical analyses of the fruit harvested from the trees fertilized with nitrogen and potassium demonstrated an increase in the analysed traits (macro- and micronutrients), at both 1NK and 2NK fertilization levels.
Sour cherry is one of the most important fruit crops in Poland and cultivar is an important factor in its cultivation. The experiment was conducted in a commercial family orchard in a year characterized by a warm and wet spring and also by a very hot and dry summer. Fruit yields harvested from well fertilized 19-years old ‘Kelleris 16’, ‘Nefris’ and ‘Łutówka’ trees grafted on Mahaleb cherry and protected against pests using integrated plant protection system were medium high and of good quality, however productivity index of a tree was low. The fruits attained high weight and diameter and contained big amounts of sugars, vit. C, anthocyanins and flavonoids and medium amount of phenolic acids. Among anthocyanins the most important were cyanidin 3-glucosyl-rutinoside and cyanidin 3-rutinoside. Antioxidant activity of fruits measured as percent of DPPH inhibition was high and similar among compared cultivars. Łutówka was the most productive cultivar of medium leaf and fruit size and with fruits of highest vit. C and flavonoids content and lowest total sugars and monosaccharides content. The least productive cultivar was Nefris, though its fruits were the biggest and contained dry matter, soluble solids, anthocyanins and phenolic acids in the highest amounts of all and vit. C at the lowest level of all. Kelleris 16 was the medium productive cultivar characterized by widest leaf blades and smallest fruits. Content of total sugars and monosaccharides in its fruits was the highest and content of anthocyanins and phenolic acids was the lowest. Residues of dodine and thiacloprid determined in the fruits immediately after harvest were much lower than the permissible residue maximum level.
Over a three-year period (1997-1999) investigations were conducted on the effect of 6 date of cut to the stub on tree trunk diameter, height and branching of sour cherry maidens in the nursery. On the Prunus mahaleb seed1ing rootstock were found no significant influence of the date between January, 15 - March, 30 of eut to the stub on growth of sour cherry maidens cv. 'Łutówka' (tree trunk diameter and branching) and efficiency of nursery. The date of cutting in 15 April decreased trunk diameter and percent of the first qua1ity trees.
