A new neotenic salamander, Seminobatrachus boltyschkensis gen. et sp. nov., is described based on 14 skeletons of late Paleocene–early Eocene age preserved on drill core slabs from the Cherkassy Region, central Ukraine. The new taxon is diagnosed by the following unique combination of characters: dorsal process of premaxilla posteriorly elongate and overlaps frontal; maxilla greatly reduced in size; parietal–squamosal contact absent; vomerine tooth row long and parallel to maxillary arcade; pterygoid has long anterior process; quadrate ossified; marginal and palatal teeth pedicellate; trunk vertebrae amphicoelous, each having a subcentral keel, anterior basapophysis, and spinal nerve foramina; ribs bicipital; carpals and tarsals unossified; and phalangeal formulae of 2−2−3−2 and 2−2−3−4−2 for manus and pes, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis nests S. boltyschkensis within Urodela (i.e., crown−clade salamanders), but its exact phylogenetic position is equivocal, resolving in one of three ways: (1) in an unresolved trichotomy with Salamandra and (Ambystomatidae + (Dicamptodon + Rhyacotriton)) (results obtained in NONA v. 2.0, with the WINCLADA v. 1.00.08 interface; the parsimony ratchet (island hopper) algorithm), (2) as a sister taxon of (Salamandra + (Ambystomatidae + (Dicamptodon + Rhyacotriton))) clade (results obtained in TNT v. 1.1; the implicit enumeration search algorithm) or (3) as a sister taxon of Ambystomatidae (results obtained in PAUP v. 4.0b10; the branch−and−bound search algorithm).
The Paleocene–Eocene boundary is of particular importance for the evolution of mammals and the poorly known Asian mammal faunas from this period have received much attention. The late Paleocene Subeng site in Inner Mongolia (China) has come under study only recently, and here we present the first complete description of its mammal fauna. Two new species are described, the neoplagiaulacid multituberculate Mesodmops tenuis sp. nov. and the praolestine nyctitheriid Bumbanius ningi sp. nov., representing stratigraphic range extensions of the respective genera into the Paleocene. Previously unknown parts of the dentition are described here for the eurymylid Eomylus bayanulanensis, the sarcodontid Hyracolestes ermineus, the cimolestid Tsaganius ambiguus, the carpolestid Subengius mengi, as well as the femur of the mesonychid Dissacus serratus. For most taxa, the new specimens from Subeng provide new phylogenetic and/or biostratigraphic information. We confirm the inclusion of Hyracolestesin the Sarcodontinae and elevate this group to the rank of family, the Sarcodontidae, separate from Micropternodontidae. In the case of Subengius mengi an updated cladistic analysis of carpolestids supports the hypothesis that Subengius is derived from an evolved Elphidotarsius−like ancestor in the early to middle Tiffanian of North America. A total of 17 species is identified, including well−known biostratigraphic markers for the late Paleocene Gashatan Asian Land Mammal Age such as Lambdopsalis bulla, Prionessus sp., Palaeostylops iturus, Pseudictops lophiodon, Tribosphenomys minutus, and Dissacus serratus. We propose that the Gashatan faunas are less endemic than previously thought, and result from a significant exchange with North American faunas from the late Paleocene.
Until now, Thyridates was considered an American genus. In this work seven African species of Bittacus are transferred toThyridates: T. stanleyi (BYERS, 1968), T. erythrostigma (BYERS, 1975), T. weelei (ESBEN-PETERSEN, 1913), T. nebulosus (KLUG, 1838), T. testaceous (KLUG, 1838), T. oreinus (NAVÁS, 1914), and T. chevalieri (NAVÁS, 1908). A new species of Thyridates from the late Paleocene of Argentina is described. The geographic relationships between species of the genus suggest the idea of a Gondwanan origin of this group before separation of Africa and South America in the Lower Cretaceous.
New mammalian fossils at Cochrane 2, Paskapoo Formation, Alberta, Canada, document five new species and two new combinations: Ptilodus gnomus sp.nov.and Baiotomeus russelli sp.nov.(Multituberculata), Thryptacodon orthogonius comb.nov.and Litomylus grandaletes sp.nov.(“Condylarthra”), Pararyctes rutherfordi sp.nov., Bessoecetor septentrionalis comb.nov., and Paleotomus junior sp.nov.(Eutheria incertae sedis).These new taxa supplement a taxonomically diverse Cochrane 2 local fauna, representing one of the most species rich Paleocene mammalian localities in the world. An earliest Tiffanian age is estimated for the locality based on the presence of the index taxa Plesiadapis praecursor, Nannodectes intermedius, and Ectocion collinus.The Cochrane 2 local fauna fails to demonstrate a decrease in species number relative to those of late Torrejonian localities from the United States, as would be predicted by current paleoclimate scenarios; the rarity of earliest Tiffanian localities in North America suggests sampling error as a partial explanation for the apparent incongruity.
