Metabolic activity of heterotrophic bacteria isolated from coastal lake Łebsko was determined using the respirometric method. It has been shown that planktonie bacteria oxidized organic compounds with various intensity. Caseine hydrolyzate was the most intensively oxidized respiratory substrate, whereas cellobiose was oxidized the least intensively. In the studied lake, oxygen was taken up most actively by bacteria of the Flavobacterium-Cytophaga group and the genus Pseudomonas in their respiratory processes. The level of metabolic activity of bacteria from different parts of the lake was shown to differ. The oxygen uptake of bacterial mixtures was, as a rule, lower than the sum of oxygen uptake of single strains.
The surface water microlayer (SML) is a thin layer found at the interface of the hydrosphere and the atmosphere. It is capable of accumulating chemical substances and microorganisms at a rate as high as 100-fold greater than that observed in the subsurface water. The rate of accumulation of biogens and chlorophyll a in SML of an estuary, where marine and fresh waters mix, varies considerably and it depends on the degree mixing of these waters, which is manifested in the varying values of the enrichment factor (EF, calculated as the ratio of nutrients concentration in SML versus subsurface water). The influence of the Baltic Sea marine water and the freshwater Łeba River inflows on the estuarine Lake Łebsko (Poland) was examined. Nine sampling sites were located in the estuary. Water samples were collected from two layers: the surface microlayer (thickness 242 µm ± 40) and the subsurface water (15 cm depth). The capacity of the SML to enrich the water in nutrients and chlorophyll differed among various parts of the estuary, as well as between seawater and river waters. Statistically significant higher EF were found in the marine waters than in river waters for the nitrogen and phosphorus compounds as well as chlorophyll. There were also differences in EF between marine and lake waters. The highest EF were also recorded for organic forms of nitrogen and phosphorus in marine water. Most probably, marine flux into the estuarine Lake Łebsko, resulted in the increased EF for these investigated components.
The main aim of the paper is to present general information about hydro-meteorological conditions in the catchment of the Łebsko Lake. In the first part of the article a short description of the most important hydrographic elements of the investigated area (the Łebsko Lake, the Łeba River and its tributaries) was provided. The climatic analysis of local conditions, besides the characteristics of the air temperature and precipitation, contains the distribution of other principal meteorological elements (pressure, wind, cloud cover or relative humidity). The paper is a part of broader studies aimed at finding the key factors determining seasonal and annual changes of water relations in the catchment of the Łebsko Lake.
Paratenuisentis ambiguus, an acanthocephalan originating from North America, is an alien species parasitising the European eel Anguilla anguilla. It was first recorded in Lake Łebsko, on the central coast of Poland. The report gives morphometric measurements of male and female P. ambiguus from this locality. Because of the spread of the intermediate host Gammarus tigrinus and the appearance of new adults in eels along the southern Baltic Coast, P. ambiguus is evidently able to complete its life cycle in Baltic coastal waters.
The aim of this paper was the presentation and comparison of seasonal biogens changes and trophy state classification of two biggest shallow coastal lakes Gardno and Łebsko, located in the northern part of Poland, along the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. Measurements were conducted once a month from April to December 2007. For the purpose of this article at each lake one measurement station was selected, to represent well mixed area of the lakes, far from outlet to the sea and rivers. Performed measurements showed that the lakes are similar. The differences, observed between biogens concentration in lakes were statistically insignificant. Seasonal dynamics of nutrients concentration in lakes indicated that the lakes are typical shallow lakes. Moreover, the summer concentration of total nitrogen and phosphorus qualify these lakes as eutrophic.
The aim of this study was to determine the impact of sex on the content of β-carotene, lutein, astaxanthin, canthaxanthin, zeaxanthin, and total carotenoids in the skin, muscles, and livers of whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus lavaretus (L.)). Fish samples for assays were collected from Lake Łebsko. There is a whitefish conservation program in Lake Łebsko. The results show that males are more carotenoid rich in comparison to females. The total carotenoids ranged from 0.39 μg g⁻¹ wet weight (ww) (skin of females) to 1.55 μg g⁻¹ ww (livers of males). The highest carotenoid levels were in whitefish fivers (1.36 - 1.55 μg g⁻¹ ww), and the lowest were in its skin (0.39 - 0.41 μg g⁻¹ ww). Astaxanthin was the dominant carotenoid in whitefish muscles and fivers. The highest levels of β-carotene were recorded in the skin of both whitefish males and females.
The age structure and growth rate of a native population of whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus lavaretus L., were analyzed on the basis of 66 specimens. The fishes were caught in autumn-winter 2000-2001 in Łebsko Lake. Fecundity estimates were calculated from a sample of 43 female ovaries. The age of the studied whitefish ranged from 2+ to 9+. Specimens aged 2+ predominated. In the first year of life the whitefish reached a body length (longitudo corporis - l.c.) of 12.2 (± 2.9) cm and a weight of 255 (± 150.1) g. In subsequent years these figures were as follows: second year - 30.8 (± 5.9) cm and 775 (± 287.9) g; fifth year - 27.3 (± 4.7) cm and 2581 (± 315.8) g; ninth year - 53.9 cm and 3878 (± 124.2) g. Average fecundity ranged from 46.8 (± 6.3) to 154.4 (± 13.4) thousands eggs in segregated size classes.
The abundance of the spawning population of roach females from the coastal lakes Gardno (2 468 ha) and Łebsko (7 140 ha) located in the Słowiński National Park was estimated for the 1987-1992 period. Following bream, roach is the second most common cyprinid species in regulated fisheries catches. The size of the spawning population was estimated using Virtual Population Analysis and long-term fisheries statistics. Female roach dominated the exploited population at 62.4% in Lake Gardno and 64.3% in Lake Łebsko. During the analyzed period, more roach females were caught in Lake Gardno, which is more than twice as small as Lake Łebsko. Of the generations analyzed (1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989 and 1990), more abundant years occurred in Lake Gardno. The most abundant generation in the two lakes was that of 1985, and following it, each subsequent generation was “weaker” than the preceding had been.
Communities of parasites of European perch from lake Łebsko were studied and compared with similar communities from the Polish coastal zone. Parasites comprised 18 autogenic and 5 allogenic species. Most individual parasites belonged to allogenic species and were in larval stages. The majority of specimens were eye parasites with Tylodelphys clavata as the eudominant species. The dominant species, Acanthocephalus lucii, belongs to the intestine parasite community. Three marine species were found: Bothriocephalus scorpii, Hysterothylacium aduncum and Echinorchynhus gadi. The results indicate that the parasite fauna consists mostly of freshwater species, common in various types of European waters, while marine species were rarely observed.
Ciliates constitute an important trophic link in aquatic environments, because they are essential food sources for zooplankton and fish. In this study, the spatial differences in abundance and composition of ciliate communities in relation to varying water salinity were investigated. The study was conducted in the large, brackish, eutrophic lakes Gardno and Łebsko. In the studied lakes, no significant differences among ciliate communities were identified among sampling sites. Ciliate communities in Lake Łebsko were characterized by a high contribution of tintinnids, with mean values at particular sites between 32% and 36%. In Lake Gardno, where salinity was lower, the importance of tintinnid ciliates increased after a marine water intrusion into the lake. In both lakes, the importance of tintinnids in ciliate communities was higher than in adjacent fresh and marine waters. Shortly after wind-driven intrusions of marine waters (backwaters), the marine and brackish mixotrophic ciliate Mesodinium rubrum was observed in both lakes. Once, in the eastern part of Lake Łebsko, Mesodinium major (= Mesodinium rubrum forma major) was observed after a strong backwater when salinity reached 5.4 PSU.
The importance of ciliates as a trophic link, which is defined as a fraction of the energy bound by primary producers that is transferred through the ciliate community, was assessed in the pelagic zones of shallow, eutrophic, and estuarine lakes. The study was conducted in Lake Gardno and Lake Łebsko located in northern Poland. Each of these lakes is characterized by very high mean annual ciliate biomasses of 115 μg C -1 (Lake Gardno, April 2006 – April 2007), 107 μg C L-1 (Lake Gardno, February 2007 – February 2008), 85 μg C L-1 (Lake Łebsko, April – November 2007), and 127 μg C L-1 (Lake Łebsko, April – September 2008). Ciliate production was estimated using allometric equations and was compared to primary production measured with the light-and-dark bottles method. Annual, depth-integrated ciliate secondary production corresponded to 9 and 11% (Lake Gardno, two consecutive years studied) and 12% (Lake Łebsko, the same value for two growing seasons studied) of primary production. These values exceed the majority of other estimates in the literature, which indicates the high importance of ciliates in such highly-productive, shallow lakes.
The research has shown the domination of fluctuative trends in the biomass dynamics for a major-ity of the caught fish species and decrease in the stocks of littoral phytophil fish. The main reason of the fishery breakdown of the pike perch in Łebsko and perch in Sarbsko was exploitation at a too big scale. The resources of the mentioned fish populations were drastically violated in the first decade of the 47 years of exploitation, that is in the years: 1952-1999. However, the highest fishing level of most of the fish species in annual cycles was achieved notoriously at spawning pe-riods during the whole 47 years. It just goes to show a complete ignorance of valid periods and the protective dimensions in the fishery practice. In the consecutive decades and for all the 47 years, the position and the degree of mass dominance for separate species of fish in fishing have been es-tablished. Pairs of superdominants and eudominants with the greatest quantitative participation in fishing have been distinguished for each of the lake. For the regeneration of the pike’s, the tench’ and the crucian carp’ population fishing of those species should be banned for the time of their generation. Reduction to small Cyprynidae species should be conducted by intensive stock in Łebsko with the pike and in Sarbsko with the pike-perch.
