On 20 February 2010 the Regulation (EC) No 66/2010 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 November 2009 on the EU Ecolabel has come into force which replaced hitherto Regulation no. 1980/2000. The Regulation lays down, among the others, rules for the establishment and application of the voluntary EU Ecolabel scheme, defines general requirements for EU Ecolabel criteria, market surveillance and control of the use of the EU Ecolabel, the role of Competent bodies and European Union Ecolabelling Board. The EU Ecolabel scheme is part of the sustainable consumption and production policy of the Comminity, which aims at reducing the negative impact of consumption and production on the environment, health, climate and natural resources. The scheme is intended to promote those products which have a high level of environmental performance throught the use of the EU Ecolabel.
