The structure of the dermapteran hind wings is described and their hind wing folding is compared with other insect taxa with folded wings (i.e. Coleoptera, Hymenoptera and Blattodea). The peculiarities of the dermapteran hind wing folding are pointed out: the wings are unfolded by the cerci, one wing after the other, in a rather slow process. The antagonistic movement, folding the wings, is achieved by intrinsic elasticity and resilin. The stem group representatives of the Dermaptera, the ‘Archidermaptera’ and the ‘Protelytroptera’, both taxa probably paraphyletic, do show the step-wise transformation from a simple, unfolded, ‘cockroach’-like wing, to the complex wing of Recent Dermaptera.
Stationery private apiary localized in Pulawy was the area, where the samples of European earwig (Forficula auricularia L.) were collected for this study. Acarological analyses of insects settled with external mites were conducted during the summer-autumn seasons (2004–2006). Results of microscopic examinations of 211 collected adult earwig specimens show that majority of them, i.e. 81.5% were settled with phoretic forms of astigmatid mites (Astigmata). They were phoretic hypopodes belonging mainly to superfamilies Anoetoidea (fam. Histiostomatidae: Histiostoma polypori, H. feroniarum) and significantly rare to Acaroidea (fam. Acaridae: Acarus farris, Caloglyphus berlesei, Rhizoglyphus echinopus); infestation of earwigs with mites belonging to other systematic groups was very rare or sporadic only. The number of mites per one insect varied from a single to over 100 hypopi (at average: 8.4). They were located mainly in the anterior part of lateral side of thorax, on the surface of posterior end (cerci) of abdomen, rare on ventral side of body, sometimes also on the legs but very rare on distal, movable body parts (tarsi, mouth parts, antennae).
The Tertiary genus Laasbium Scudder, originally described with two species and as a lineage of staphylinid beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) from the Eocene-Oligocene boundary of Florissant, Colorado, is re-evaluated. Examination of the original series for Laasbium agassizii Scudder (type species) and Laasbium sectile Scudder reveal that these represent incompletely preserved earwigs (Dermaptera). The genus Laasbium is transferred to the order Dermaptera and comments provided on the classification of Florissant fossil earwigs, all previously placed in the genus Labiduromma Scudder. A lectotype is designated for Laasbium agassizii and the following six new genera erected to accommodate the diversity of Florissant fossil earwigs (authorship of all taxa is Engel and Chatzimanolis): Petrolabis (type species: Labiduromma gurneyi Brown), Litholabis (type species: Labiduromma gilberti Scudder), Rupiforficula (type species: Labiduromma scudderi Brown), Geroncolabis (type species: Labiduromma tertiaria Scudder), Spiladopygia (type species: Labiduromma exsultatum Scudder), and Paleocarcinophora (type species: Labiduromma lithophila Scudder). The following new combinations are established: Petrolabis gurneyi (Brown), Litholabis gilberti (Scudder), Rupiforficula scudderi (Brown), Rupiforficula labens (Scudder), Rupiforficula interna (Scudder). “Laasbium” sectile, a poorly-preserved lateral compression, is considered genus incertae sedis.
