The effect of temperature on the duration of larval, prepupal, and pupal development of the European leaf roller, Archips rosanus L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) was studied at four constant temperatures (18, 22, 26, and 30°C) where Malus communis L. (apple, Stark Crimson) was used as food. Significant positive linear relationships were observed between development rate and temperature for all life stages. Minimum developmental threshold temperatures were estimated as 5.5-6.7°C for first stages, 5.8-5.7°C for second stages, 5.1-6.3°C for prepupae, and 8.1-6.3°C for pupae, male and female, respectively. Lower threshold of complete development of adult was estimated as 6.05°C (male) and 6.0°C (female). Median development values of degree-days (DD) for first stages, second stages, prepupae, pupae and complete preimaginal development were 57.5-55.2, 55.2-66.2, 33.1-33.9, 137-175.4 and 476.2-526 for male and female, respectively. A degree-day model was developed using from the laboratory data for predicting the first emergence of the pest and spray application time. Estimated degree-day model predicted the emergence within 3-7 days of that observed at the field site in both 2001 and 2002. Accordingly, the degree-day model will be useful to predict the first emergence dates, optimum spray period and to provide a starting point to catches in pheromone traps in the summer for A. rosanus.
In 2006–2009, the occurrence of leaf rollers was monitored in three different regions of Poland. The results of observations suggested diversified number of rollers in different regions and over different years. The highest number of recorded Archips rosanus rollers was in 2008, whereas Pandemis heparana roller peak occurred in 2007. Since 2007, in the region of Central Poland, the number of Adoxophyes orana and Spilonota ocellana roller systematically increased. A. orana roller occurred in high intensity throughout all the orchards in which conducted the research. Considerable differences were stated in dates of moths’ flight initiation within individual orchards and vegetative seasons. The dynamics of moths’ flight was also differentiated. Because of this there is a need of scheduling different treatment dates for each region and orchard.
Evaluation offruits and leaves ofseventeen apple cultivars in respect of their attraction as food for caterpillars of leafroller species occurring in an experimental apple orchard was carried out over 1995 to 1998 in the Institute ofPomology and Floriculture at Skierniewice. The highest levels ofinjuries were observed on two cultivars: ‘Ligol’ and ‘Elstar’. High number ofinjured fruits was noted on the following cultivars: ‘Gala’, ‘Jonagold’, ‘Cortland’, ‘Idared’, ‘Lodel’ and ‘Szampion’. By far the number of injured fruits was lower on ‘Lobo’ and ‘Jonathan’, and the least on ‘Rubinette’, ‘Starkrimson’ and ‘Gloster’. Significant differences in the number of caterpillars settled down in leaf/flower clusters ofparticular cultivars during the vernal period were also confirmed. In each season the highest number ofcaterpillars of Pandemis heparana and Archips rosana were observed on leaves of‘Alwa’. To cultivars whose leaves were also readily settled down by the two aforementioned species were: ‘Jonathan’, ‘Cortland’, ‘Ligol’, ‘Lobo’, ‘Jonagold’ and ‘Elstar’. Relatively less caterpillars were observed on leaves of‘Arlet’, ‘Gloster’, ‘Szampion’, ‘Starkrimson’, ‘Pilot’, ‘Pinowa’ and ‘Rubinette’.
