Selection of Fusarium sambucinum reizolates for high aggressiveness to potato tubers was conducted from 2000 to 2009. Five potato cultivars were used in the study: Bzura, Denar, Hinga, Irys and Tara. In 2000–2007, the differences in aggressiveness between reisolates were significant for all potato cultivars tested. Selection towards high aggressiveness of F. sambucinum reisolates in 2000–2007 probably caused the lack of significant differences in 2008 and 2009. It was confirmed also by a smaller range of infection degree and smaller standard deviation than observed in 2000–2007.
The influence of short and long day length on the expression of qualitative and quantitative resistance to Phytophthora infestans in potato was studied. The incompatible interaction was tested for available set of isolates avirulent in greenhouse conditions to potato Black’s differentials possessing the genes: R2, R5, R6, R8, R9, R10, and standard potato cultivar Tarpan (no known R gene). The avirulent isolates either were completely avirulent regardless of plant growing conditions, or they infected leaflets of these differentials more frequently when plants were exposed previously to short day conditions than to long day conditions. This study highlights the importance of day length, among many other factors which are controlled, in testing the expression of the virulence of P. infestans isolates. In compatible interactions, when quantitative resistance was evaluated in differentials with gene R1, R3, R4, R7, R11, and potato cultivar Craigs Royal (no known R gene), stronger infection expressed by lesion growth rate, as well as stronger sporulation, were observed on potato leaflets of plants exposed to short day for 6–7 weeks before inoculation. The analysis of variance revealed a significant contribution to variation in lesion growth rate of day length, genotype, as well as day length by genotype interaction. Significant influence of isolate, and genotype, but not day length, on the expression of the incubation period was found. The results indicate the necessity of evaluating components of partial resistance present in potato lines used in breeding potato resistant to P. infestans in destined day length growing conditions.
Results of experiments with isolates A1 and A2 from populations occurring in Poland in the years 1993-1998 were compared. Mating types A1 and A2 did not significantly differ with respect of virulence spectrum, pathogenicity level and virulence diversity (Shannon index). After pairing isolates A1 and A2 formed oospores; their morphological characteristics were described. On selected fields a test was performed whether the oospores could play a role as a source of primary infection. Local populations occurring on three fields were characterized. Results obtained on investigated 3 separate fields, located in 2 voivodeships of southern Poland were compared. It was stated on the basis of the proportion of both mating type isolates, race complexity and diversity, that oospores could play a role as a source of primary infection, at least in one of localities in Boguchwała, podkarpackie voivodeship.
The formation of phenotypic structure of P. infestans population in Poland was determined by analyzing 1603 isolates collected from 1987 to 2001. The race complexity, low at the beginning of experiment, has been increasing from year to year and reached in 2001 a high level 7.2 virulence factors per isolate. The single and less composed races dominating first1y in the population were replaced gradually by more composed races. The virulence factors 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 and 11 occurred most frequent1y, but factors 5 and 8 were noted sporadically. The A2 mating type was detected in 1988 at first and since that time its occurrence has been noted in Polish population each year. The oospores were formed in potato tissues. Race diversity, low at the beginning of the investigation, reached a peak in 1996-2001. During 1987-1990 weakly and middly aggressive phenotypes dominated in Polish population. In the later period very aggressive isolates were more frequent. Phenotypic race similarity of P. infestans populations in 1987 and 2001 was very low. The race structure of 1987 population was totally different from the race structure of populations of the next years. it was probably due to migration of new pathotypes. On the other hand the variation in complexity, diversity and similarity of races, as well as in aggressiveness observed in later years of investigation can be caused by the presence of both mating types and sexual recombination.
