Eight species belonging to the relicts of primary forests were observed in the area of the planned nature reserves (E CKELT et al. 2018). Their presence is facilitated by the accumulation of considerable amount of dead wood resulting from longer periods of stagnant surface water. In spite of the fact, that the studied areas of the planned reserves constitute rather small forest complexes surrounded by the agricultural areas, they still preserved conditions favourable for survival of saproxylic beetles characteristic of large natural forest areas (G UTOWSKI et al. 2002), such as Białowieża Forest, Świętokrzyskie Mountains, Kampinos Forest and Knyszyńska Forest. The fact that 197 species of beetles new to Lublin Upland were identified is the evidence of incomplete knowledge of the fauna in this particular area, and points to the desirability of further studies on the biodiversity of both planned reserves. The presence among the collected specimens of rare species characteristic of natural forests proves that even smaller forests located in the river valleys constitute significant migration corridors and refugia for these beetles.
