The paper presents a view on selected problems concerning application of steel sandwich panels to marine structures. Such problems connected with specificity of thin- skin laser- welded structure are varying in topics beginning from micro-scale properties of laser- welded T-joint through the joining of sandwich structures together up to connection and integration of such structures with a classical single-skin structure
Paper presents examples of laboratory test and numerical modelling results of steel sandwich panels under in-plane load. Test and modelling procedure is presented and comparison of numerical and laboratory test obtained results of static compression is discussed
Small closed sea shipping regions (such as the Baltic Sea) are specially vulnerable to consequences of ecological disasters due to spills of fuel oil used for ship propulsion and carried in single-plating double-bottom tanks. An alternative solution (against the recommended double- plating structure) was proposed. It consists in applying the second, elastic protection barrier to decrease risk of oil spills resulting from loss of tightness of ship plating in consequence of e.g. collision or grounding
This paper presents a proposal of algorithm for determining fatigue life of steel laser-welded panels, elaborated on the basis of results of the author’s laboratory tests of full-scale structural models. The methodical algorithm and an example of elaborated design curve is presented
Greater and greater number of cargo ships sailing over small, restricted water areas can endanger the environment - in the case of disaster - by spilling fuel oil, carried in the ship’s bottom tanks for its propulsion. In this paper is proposed an alternative solution (against that of double plating) in the form of the second, elastic protective barrier which would be able to decrease risk of spilling in the case of loss of ship’s plating tightness due to collision or grounding
In the paper selected approximate methods for calculation of inland waterways ship resistance and their verification by towing tests, compared on the example of a small urban ferry, are presented. The test results are made for both the bare hull and the hull with appendages (skeg, azimuthal propeller). Significant differences between results of the theoretical methods and experimental ones, especially in the case of the model with skegs and propulsion, are pointed out. The purposefulness of using several parametric methods and the use of average results at the preliminary design stage were also discussed
