The investigations on mechanical properties of reed stems face numerous difficulties, because of their anisotropy, heterogeneity, shell-like structure, small lateral dimensions of stems and huge diversity of species and habitats of origination. Aware of all difficulties to cope with, the basic experiment has been conducted, that is the uni-axial tension test for reed stems, with- and without joints. The strain-stress relation, at tension, displayed an exponential character, showing material stiffening with the growth of strain. Test results incline to conclusion, that stem-pieces without joints are equally stiff as pieces with joints, however, they are twice as strong as the latter. It means, that joints can be perceived as fragile (in the sense: “brittle”) discontinuity in structure of reed stems. The results of the test have been put through critical estimate and analysis tending to statistical modelling of the load-carrying ability of reed stems.
The paper discusses circumstances that lead to improper measurements of temperature: without appropriate consideration to the context of physical phenomena occurring in nature or without appropriate awareness of mathematical principles; all of which results in data misinterpretation. Based on the conducted discussion, it can be stated that measurements and analyses of thermal phenomena, which are time-varying processes, should be performed using the same principles and tools as in the identification of dynamic processes, such as the Nyquist theorem.
The paper discusses various methods of determining mean temperature in climate studies and the consequences of applying particular methods. The conclusion is that the use of various mathematical formulas that describe mean temperature usually yields different results. In some cases, the differences can reach ten to twenty percent. Consequently, the results of different analyses are incomparable, even in engineering, and especially in research and scientific studies. Hence the postulate to avoid conducting comparative analyses with the use of data from different authors, if their temperature definitions are different, or if there is no precise information on the formulas used in the calculation.
The study analyzed the impact of additional tower structure masses on the change of the frequency of its natural vibrations; it also made attempts to mathematical description of this impact. Considerations apply to the tower supporting the lighting system of the city stadium in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski. The source of additional masses is the icing (frost, rime) and non-structural components constituting the technical equipment of the tower. The analysis was made by modeling by means of the Finite Element Method (FEM) of the structure with the assumption of a one parameter variation of its mass (i.e., the additional mass of all components, structural and non-structural, changes in proportion to one parameter, which is the outer surface of the element on which the ice layer is deposited). Solving the problem of natural vibrations, for subsequent models, representing different intensity of tower's icing, the following natural frequencies have been established. Thus, the increase of the ice-layer thickness on the surfaces from 0 to 2.4 cm caused the reduction of basic natural frequencies by a value, consecutively: for f1 → 26.9%; for f → 27.2%. These values are important from the point of view of technical applications. The findings allow to formulate a postulate that, in the analysis of tower's structure susceptibility to gusts of wind, structure's mass variability resulting from its possible icing was taken into consideration.
Eleven isolates of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were isolated from soil contaminated with crude oil derivatives and petroleum-refining wastewaters and used to investigate the effectiveness of carbon reduction and biotransformation of phosphogypsum. One of the isolates (culture no. 10) was found to be very effective with 90% carbon reduction (measured as COD) and the simultaneous biotransformation of approximately 2.65g phosphogypsum/L in industrial petroleum-refining wastewaters.
