The aim of the study was to establish the frequencies of SNPs polymorphisms in β-lactoglobulin (LGB), κ-casein (CSN3) and growth hormone receptor (GHR) genes in five goat breeds kept in Poland. Blood samples from 24 farms possessing 27 goat flocks of the Alpine (A), Polish Fawn Improved (PFI), Saanen (S), Polish White Improved (PWI) and Boer (B) goat breeds were collected and used for genomic DNA extraction (219 samples in total; 32–49 samples per breed) due to the procedure proposed by the ECONOGENE consortium (2002). Researched SNPs were identifi ed due to the KASPar® technology (KBioscience, UK 2007). Genotypes and alleles frequencies were obtained and moreover the differences between breeds were estimated by the Chi-square test in SPSS 14.0 PL software. The results expressed the highest frequencies of “g:g” homozygots and “g” allele in LGB in milk breeds (PWI, PFI, S and A). Due to the CSN3 gene the high frequencies of “a:a” homozygots and “a” allele were observed in the Saanen, Polish White Improved and Boer goats. No “g” allele was presented in the B goat in CSN3 gene. The results showed three self-distinguishing groups of goat breeds: the colored (A and PFI), the white (S and PWI) and the meat (B) goats. The Boer goat (B) presented the significant genetic difference from the other milk breeds in all examined genes.
Characterization of body constitution of old type Polish Merino ewes bred in mazowieckie voivodeship. The study was conducted in 2008 on the 5 flocks of the old type Polish Merino sheep, which were classified into the breed preservation programs. The flocks were located in the mazowieckie voivodeship at territory of 3 districts: płockie (3 flocks), ciechanowskie (1 flock) and grójeckie (1 flock). The ewes were at the age of 2-11 years (225 heads in total). The body measurements were done in 8 places on live animals and their body weight was also obtained. The study showed the huge variation of body constitution and body weight of the old type Polish Merino ewes according to the age and the flock. The results indicate the necessity of stronger focusing on the body constitution as well as the breeding conditions typical for that breed in the aim of the unification of body constitution and body weight of sheep which are classified to the programs of preservation of genetic resources.
The research was carried out in two companies of the Agricultural Property Agency in Żołędnica and Żydowo situated in the Wielkopolskie voivodeship. The performance traits were estimated on flocks of Berrichone, Suffolk and Charolaise - the sheep of meat breeds. In respect of reproduction traits, their low values were observed, especially in flock of Suffolk, what indicates the need to run breeding work with the aim to increase the frequency of twin’ births. The obtained results pointed to the directions for further improvement of meat breeds of the sheep, kept in the companies of the Agricultural Property Agency in relation to the improvement of reproduction traits as well as meatiness and fatness of carcasses. Moreover, the need of performing ultrasound measurements on live sheep has been indicated, especially towards the improvement of conformation traits, supported with the breeding work which should be based on the import of breeding rams of above mentioned sheep breeds from the countries where the intensive evaluation of these breeds Is carried out in the performance stations, e.g. France. Crossbreeding of Polish Merino ewes with rams of meat breeds, especially with Berrichone and Charolaise, being kept by the companies of the Agricultural Property Agency, resulted in the improvement of carcass quality, as measured by the EUROP classification system according to the market and trade requirements as well as the improvement of meat quality; the both reasons argue for the further breeding and performance improvement for the needs of the national sheep breeding in Poland.
