The article describes a part of survey carried out under the research titled „The Tourism vs. Sustainable Development of Small Towns” being implemented by the Institute of Spatial Management and Housing, Warsaw. The survey was carried out in four small towns (Sieraków, Wolsztyn, Pułtusk, Warka) in the summer 2011. The results formed the grounds for appraising small towns in terms of their tourist values, development of tourism, and accessibility. In addition, we measured the satisfaction of tourism in small towns, being one of the indicators applied by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for appraising the sustainable development of tourism. The declared level of satisfaction of tourism in all four towns was high, which was proved by the big percentage of those who visited small towns once again. In general, respondents better appraised the towns from the Wielkopolskie province (Sieraków, Wolsztyn) than those from the Mazowieckie province (Pułtusk, Warka).
The growing impact of tourism on spatial changes, resulting in the increasing importance of land use planning process, with particular emphasis on the needs of the tourism sector. This article was developed as part of the research task: ‘Spatial Planning tourism and recreation’, which was implemented in IGPiM in 2013-2014. In the intention of the author, this article was meant as starting point for further work carried out in the framework of the research task. Therefore, the article has a theoretical character, and is based on the literature review, in particular related to tourism geography. The article discusses five theoretical concepts referring to the planning of tourist areas, and also discusses some selected documents related to the tourism development in Poland. In summary needs and problems related to spatial planning of tourism areas has been identified.
This paper rises the problem of how to measure the degree of implementation of the idea of sustainable development. Discusses the various typologies and divisions of indicators of sustainable development divisions, with particular emphasis on their application in tourism. Among the indicators were discussed indicators of sustainable tourism development recommended by the WTO (World Tourism Organization). In addition, discusses the system of indicators developed for the european tourism - VISIT. Reference was made to other methods used to assess the sustainability of tourism development. Stressed that the majority of measures used in monitoring sustainability is an integrated. Presented in the article an overview of the many indicators can request an absence of a single, universally accepted method for monitoring sustainable development and sustainable tourism.
