The most intensive displacement of Pb and Cd in the Goczałkowice Reservoir occurred from water near the bottom to the bottom sediment and to the interstitial water as well as from the interstitial water to the bottom sediment and to water near the bottom. The time of removing Pb and Cd from water near the bottom to the interstitial water was on average 21 days for Pb and 2.75 days for Cd, but from water near the bottom to the bottom sediment 0.23 day for Pb and 0.02 day for Cd. In the increase in Pb content in water near the bottom also precipitation played an important role.

Effects of pH and aeration on copper migration in above-sediment water

The research analyzed the influence of pH and aeration of the above-sediment water on the amount of copper released from the contaminated bottom sediments from the Rybnik Reservoir. Leaching of copper from the bottom sediment in the non-aerated systems was the highest when pH reached 2.0-3.5. For the aerated systems, the range was from 2.0 to 4.5. A dependence of the amounts of leached water on the leaching time was also observed. Sulfides were a predominant form of copper occurrence in the bottom sediment (60%). The remaining forms were as follows: organically bound, carbonates > residual > adsorbed > exchangeable.

The range of changes in the occurrence of heavy metals in the water was very wide, no seasonal trend being assessed in the changes of their content. The content of copper diminished with increasing depth of the sampling layer. In the water layer near the bottom an increase in the content of iron and manganese was observed. For the remaining metals no uniform direction of changes in their content depending on water depth was determined. An increased average level of zinc and copper was maintained in the Rybnik Reservoir in relation to the norms for purity class I, the mean content of the remaining metals not exceeding the norm.

The content of metals in carbonates, sulfides, exchangeable, adsorbed and organically bound forms was determined in bottom sediment by means of a sequential chemical extraction method after Rudd et al. Cadmium, nickel and copper was found mainly in the forms of sulfides (Cd > 40%, Ni > 30%, Cu > 70%), chromium and zinc in the fraction of carbonates and sulfides. Manganese was attributed to an organically bound form (25%), carbonates and sulfides. Iron had a very small contribution of the exchangeable and adsorbed forms (<1%); sulfides contributed the most (40-45%). Lead was found mainly in the fraction of carbonates (about 35%) at all sites. Aeration of the hypolimnetic water caused only slight changes in the forms of metal occurrence in the bottom sediment.

We krwi pępowinowej i łożysku kobiet mieszkanek okolic Cieszyna i Katowic oznaczono zawartość 7 metali ciężkich. Do oceny źródeł zanieczyszczenia organizmu metalami zastosowano analizę skupień i analizę czynników głównych. Na zawartość metali w łożyskach kobiet mieszkających w Katowicach wpływał głównie przemysł hutniczy, metalurgiczny, a także spalanie węgla i odpadów. Obecność metali we krwi pępowinowej i łożyskach kobiet mieszkających w okolicy Cieszyna była związana z emisją daleko- zasięgową znad Czech.
