Attempt of application of mixture of bacteria Propionibacterium freudenreichii spp. shermanii and Lactobacillus rhamnosus in the control of selected seed-borne cereal diseases in the field conditions was undertaken. The experiments were performed in the seasons 2009/2010 and 2010/2011. The seeds used in the experiments were naturally infected with Pyrenophora graminea and Ustilago nuda (winter barley) as well as contaminated with teliospores of Tilletia caries (winter wheat). Tested bacteria were the most efficient in the control of barley leaf stripe. Soaking the seeds during 15 minutes in a mixture of bacteria suspension resulted in the reduction of barley loose smut incidence. Efficacy of tested bacteria in control of common bunt varied between years of experiments. The obtained results indicated the need for further investigations.
The aim of this study was to isolate bacteria from silage based on corn or alfalfa and haylage, which are a rich source of lactic acid bacteria. During the experiments fungistatic properties against some pathogenic fungi belonging to Fusarium genus were evaluated. The present study examined 46 isolates from silage and haylage. Most of the lactic acid bacteria isolates reveal fungistatic activity against eight tested indicator strains. Results depended in a large extent on the species and strain of the fungus.
In the presented work the influence of mixture of Propionibacterium freudenreichii and Lactobacillus rhamnosus cultures and supernatants on growth and mycotoxins production by Fusarium culmorum were investigated. The effect of tested mixtures on the fungus growth was evaluated by the plating method. F. culmorum was more sensitive on cultures mixture than supernatants mixture. In the second part of this work the influence of cultures and supernatant mixtures on production of the most important mycotoxins by F. culmorum in grain was estimated. It was found that the concentration of zearalenone was significantly lower in the presence of culture mixtures and supernatant mixture applied in the amount 2 ml into sample. The concentration of nivalenol was on the same level in the majority of trials. Only in the sample with 2 ml of supernatant mixture the amount of nivalenol was significantly lower in comparison with the control. Unexpectedly the deoxynivalenol concentration was significantly higher in almost all samples with cultures and supernatants mixtures.
The effect of Bacillus coagulans No. 6 strain, B. circulans No. 1, 7, 8 strains and Propionibacterium on growth of Alternaria radicina on carrot tap root was estimated in the research. Investigations were carried out in two terms. In the first test, black rot lesions on carrot tap roots were significantly reduced in size when roots were treated with Propionibacterium, Bacillus coagulans No. 6 and B. circulans No. 1, 7, 8 strains. In second test only insignificant level of fungistatic activity of all tested bacteria was observed.
In the presented paper antifungal activity of two strains of Brevibacillus brevis towards some Fusarium species was investigated. The effect of bacterial cultures on the fungal growth was evaluated by the plating method. Tested strains inhibited fungal indicators, but the degree of inhibition was dependent on the strain of bacteria and Fusarium species. Generally, the higher amount of bacterial cultures showed a greater antifungal activity, while 5% of culture addition did not inhibited or slightly limited of the fungal growth. Better results were obtained for the strain B. brevis 2020, which showed even more than 30% of growth inhibition of some fungal species.
