The plants from Lamiaceae family are used in medicine, cosmetic and for food as a spice. Phenolic compounds: flavonoids and phenolic acids, the main constituents of this plants have proven multi-directional biological activity. Poyphenols has an antioxidative activity and may act in prevention of many disorders. The estimation of total polyphenols content in commercial samples of Ocimum basilicum L., Origanum vulgare L. and Thymus vulgaris L. herbs, derived from several producers and with different part number, was performed. Total polyphenol contents in plant materials were estimated by means of spectrophotometric method with Folin-Ciocalteu reagent was performed and shown as total polyphenols in dry herb calculated as pyrogallol, gallic acid and caffeic acid. The amount of total polyphenols in O. vulgare i T. vulgaris herb were similar and higher than in O. basilicum herb.
Common juniper (Juniperus communis L.) is the well-known and valuable medicinal plant. Juniper berry is used as a herbal medicine mainly due to its essential oil with diuretic, antiinflammatory, choleretic and cholagogue activities. Some other substances, as polyphenols, are present in juniper berries and other parts of this plant. The aim of this study was to estimate total polyphenols content in common juniper sprouts (leaves) originating from different places at the kujawsko-pomorskie province. The total polyphenols content was carried out by means of spectroscopic method with Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and shown as pyrogallol equivalents. The obtained results ranged in limits from 2.40±0.23% to 3.43±0.17%.
This paper presents the research on permeation enhancing properties of Nepeta cataria var. citriodora (catnip) dry extract in comparison to oleanolic acid and ursolic acid. Progesterone was chosen as a model substance for permeation test. The hydrogels made of hydroxypropylmethylcellulose with progesterone, enhancers and ethanol were applied in the study. The in vitro progesterone penetration test was based on the method proposed by Fürst, using artificial lipophilic membranes which were made of colloxylin and dodecanol. Statistical analyses showed an increase in penetration of progesterone caused by catnip dry extract in comparison to ursolic acid and blank sample. HPLC assay was applied to study the effect of enhancers on progesterone physicochemical properties. The solubility of progesterone was tested in solvent systems corresponding to liquid phases of gels. The statistical increase in progesterone solubility was observed in the presence of dry extract in comparison to the result from ursolic acid-containing sample. The partition coefficient of progesterone was evaluated by standard procedures. The statistically significant reduction of log P values for progesterone was determined in the presence of catnip dry extract.
A quantitative HPLC analysis of rosmarinic acid has been carried out in different samples of lemon balm leaves. The contents of rosmarinic acid in the samples varied significantly, ranging from 0.9% to 2.79%. Similar differentiation has been found in the content of total phenolic acids (4.08%- -11.93%) determined by means of spectrophotometric method, and also in the content of tannins (3.6%-13.2%) determined using the method with skin powder. The percentages of total flavonoids estimated by spectrophotometric method were within the limit 0.32%-0.44%. The HPLC estimation of rosmarinic acid or spectrophotometric estimation of the total phenolic acids should be regarded for the standardisation of the Melissae folium.
