Despite political and economic transformation, these issues have not been solved in Poland. The author states it is high time for change.

Advancing urbanization, inclusion of previously rural and agricultural areas into the limits of big cities can bring about transformation of many elements of the natural environment. Those living now in industrial regions forward their claims of damages for losses in crops and deterioration of buildings which, in their opinion, have been caused by air pollution from local industrial plants. According to the procedure in force the courts can only entertain individual suits. The authors question this practice.

Indoor air composition inside the cabins of five new vehicles was examined. Air pollution was assessed on the basis of determination of volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations, which were emitted from interior materials. Air samples were collected by active method onto a Carbograph 1TD. VOCs were analyzed using the TD-GC-FID/MS method. Presented results include concentrations of identified VOCs and three main group of compounds (aliphatic, aromatic, and cycloalkanes), as well as 18 target compounds and 10 main hydrocarbons, presented in vehicle interiors. It can be stated that interior air composition depended on materials used to finish the interior.

Stłuczka szklana dodawana do zestawu surowcowego musi być pozbawiona zanieczyszczeń oraz mieć odpowiednie uziarnienie. Wymaga to stosowania specjalnych urządzeń produkowanych już obecnie w kilku krajach Europy Zachodniej. W Polsce zakłady zajmujące się utylizacją stłuczki nie mają odpowiednich urządzeń umożliwiających przetworzenie jej na pełnowartościowy surowiec.

Sodium hypochlorite-digested material and scanning electron microscopy was used to study the morphology of wall ingrowths in pavement epithelium hairs of Utricularia species from the primitive section Pleiochasia (U. volubilis) and the advanced section Utricularia (U. stygia, U. intermedia). Wall ingrowths were reticulate-type in all examined species. Wall ingrowth development started with the formation of small papillae, which later lengthened and eventually fused and branched, forming a network. The sequence of wall deposition in plant hairs is given for the first time with SEM. The wall labyrinth in transfer cells of pavement epithelium hairs was found to be far from static. Different stages of wall ingrowth development were observed within the same cell.

Pharmacological inhibition of leukotriene biosynthesis: effects on the heart conductance

Leukotrienes are lipid mediators produced via 5-lipooxygenase pathway of arachidonic acid. At least two cysteinyl-leukotrienes receptors are highly expressed in the heart, including the conduction system. Coronary angiography or angioplasty is accompanied by release of cysteinyl leukotrienes into coronary circulation and into urine. We tested the hypothesis that inhibition of leukotrienes biosynthesis would affect the conductance system function. In a double-blind placebo controlled study, patients with stable angina undergoing elective coronary catheterization or angioplasty were randomly assigned to 48 hrs treatment with a 5-lipoxgenase inhibitor (n=54) or placebo (n=49). ECG Holter recording was carried out for 24 hrs before and after the procedure and urinary leukotriene E4 measurements were done. Inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase caused 26% reduction of urinary leukotriene E4, associated with: 1) decrease in heart rate by about 7%, 2) enhanced heart rate variability; 3) protection against depressions in atrioventricular conductance and ventricular repolarization induced by the procedure. No effects on either arrhythmias, or ECG patterns of ischemia were noted. We conclude that pharmacological inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase, shortly before percutaneous coronary intervention, reveals specific actions of leukotrienes on the heart rhythm. Inhibitors of 5-lipoxygenase might be of interest as a novel class of cardiac drugs affecting the conductive system.
