The word ‘bugle’ (Polish hejnał) comes from Hungarian where it means ‘dawn’, ‘morning’, ‘sunrise’. In Polish it means ‘a wakeup call’, ‘an hourly chime’. The bugle call became common in the early medieval times and was used by the military and then by the city security. Today, the bugles are played only to maintain tradition and city’s prestige. The most famous one is the Kraków bugle played every hour from the tower of Our Lady’s Basilica and broadcast by the Polish radio at midday. Other places have their own bugles, for instance Poznań, Lublin, Łódź, Płock, Jasna Góra, Warsaw, together with smaller towns like Krasnystaw, Kępno, Ostrołęka and Skierniewice. Since 1994 Lublin has been hosting the National Bugle Review. Last year, it was attended by 25 cities.

Sound is inherently connected with the geographic environment. It is present in both natural and anthropogenic landscapes. Man perceives sound not only by hearing, but by his whole self. The perception of sound is an important element of our emotional experience because it makes the space dynamic. Space without noise seems dead. The world of sound has been considerably transformed in the course of the last century. At present, the noise is omnipresent. A range of natural sounds and sounds of traditional human activity, especially work with traditional tools, have disappeared. Remaining harmonious sounds are threatened by extinction. The author cites examples from the Bug River valley and Lublin area. The so-called sound ecology deals with the noise protection and focuses on researching into sound landscapes. The author’s conclusion is that sound landscapes should be protected.

Bug is the medium rate Polish river but a significant length of the river runs along the Polish borders with Belarus and Ukraine. This is largely the reason why the river has preserved its natural bed and its valley is almost intact. The Bug has delineated the Eastern border of the EU for year. The author presents the past and present of the Bug valley and the river’s future in the new geopolitical situation.
