Paper presents a literature review concerning tospoviruses. Phylogenesis and taxonomy of tospoviruses are discussed in connection to other genera belonging to the Bunyaviridae family. The details of tospovirus structure are given together with the function of particular nucleic acid segments and particular proteins. Vector transmission of tospoviruses is reviewed with special reference to the role of Frankliniella occidentalis in spreading Tomato spotted wilt virus. The hypothesis is presented that tospoviruses are the former insect viruses that somehow adapted themselves to exist in plant cells.
