The aim of the present study was to analyse the occurrence of monoecious individuals in selected populations of Taxus baccata in Poland and Ukraine. The investigation showed the monoecy in Taxus baccata to be extremely rare phenomenon. Only four cosexual individuals were found in three by seven populations examines and the frequency of monoecy was 0.13% on average among 2986 trees verified. Isolated seeds were found on individuals with large number of male flowers. Only one tree was found with numerous macro- and microstrobiles.
Taxus baccata L. is a rare and endangered dioecious species in Europe. Species of this mating system are considered to be the most vulnerable to extinction. It is believed that one reason for this state may be the uneven reproductive effort and different habitat requirements of the two sexes. Silver fir and European yew have very similar ecological requirements, but fir is a monoecious species. The aim of this study was to compare the growth rate andthe effect of precipitation andtemperature on the annual tree-ring width of silver fir and both sexes of European yew. The study site was the Knyazhdvir reserve in western Ukraine, located near the limit of the geographical range of both species. Knyazhdvir reserve is the site of one of the last yew populations in Europe with a large number of individuals (about 15,000 individuals above 1.3 m height) growing alongside fir.Woodsamples were taken from 15 male and15 female specimens of T. baccata andfrom 15 specimens of A. alba and were subjected to a standard dendrochronological procedure. The results showed high positive correlation between the temperatures in February andMarch andthe tree-ring width in the studied species and genders. The response of annual tree-ring width to the examined climatic factors was relatively similar in yew andfir. However slight differences were foundbetween males andfemales of T. baccata. The growth rate decreased more rapidly in females compared to males, probably following sexual maturation. Precipitation in April hada positive effect on firs andfemale yews, but not on male yews. This confirms earlier reports of the requirement of female specimens of dioecious species for a higher humidity than male individuals.
Pinus uliginosa is an interesting taxon from the Pinus mugo complex with controversial systematic position andspecific characteristics, intermediate among P. mugo, P. uncinata and P. sylvestris. The peat-bog pine is rare andprotectedin Poland. All its’ known populations have a relict character andare slightly different from each other. The aim of the present study was comparison of the individuals from the Czarne Bagno of the “Torfowisko pod Zieleńcem” Nature Reserve (Sudetes), determined in the field on the basis of morphological characteristics as Pinus uliginosa, with four samples of this taxon from the northern limits of its range in PolandandGer - many andwith Pinus sylvestris, P. mugo and P. uncinata, to verify morphological andtaxonomic relations between them. The material collected from 30 individuals determined as P. uliginosa, was closest to populations of P. uliginosa from the Bory Dolnośląskie, andto P. mugo from the Tatra Mts., concerning the needle characters. The cone characteristics of P. uliginosa individuals from the Czarne Bagno appeared similar to all other of that taxon. In spite of that, the cone characters first of all differentiate P. uliginosa from P. sylvestris, P. mugo and P. uncinata. The combination of needle and cone morphological characters are a good tool to distinguish P. sylvestris, P. uncinata, P. mugo and P. uliginosa with a very high probability.
Taxus baccata L. is a rare and endangered species with restricted occurrence. One or two-year-old yew seedlings occur quite frequently in natural stands of the species, but older seedlings are rarely observed. Therefore we investigated the relationship between light intensity and the growth rate of ten-year-old seedlings of the European yew Taxus baccata (L.). The study was conducted in a preservation area established in 1999 in order to protect the gene pool of the ‘Cisy Staropolskie’ Reserve in the Bory Tucholskie Forest (northern Poland). A total of 570 three-year-old seedlings were planted under the canopy of a 45-year-old forest stand composed of oak (50%), birch (40%) and hornbeam (10%). Measurements of seedling heights were taken in 1999, 2003 and 2005. In 2005, the current annual growth increment was measured. Relative Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (RPPFD) up to 30% had a positive influence on the height and annual height increment of the yews, but most of individuals grew below 5% RPPFD. This suggests that increasing light level would increase growth of yew in both natural recruitment and planting.
Dioecy is a mating system in which a greater reproductive effort has been observed in one sex than the other. This is expressed in differences between the sexes in growth rate and spatial segregation. The spatial structure of Juniperus thurifera subsp. thurifera and Juniperus communis subsp. communis and growth rate of tree-ring width of J. thurifera were tested in different habitat conditions in Santo Domingo de Silos in northern Spain. We analyzed junipers growing on the eastern slope, with better habitat conditions, and the western, with poorer habitat conditions. The studies found that males of J. communis were taller when compared to the females, both on the eastern and the western slope. J. thurifera females were taller on the eastern slope (the better habitat), but shorter on the western slope as compared to males. J. thurifera males and females on the eastern slope had the greater tree-ring width in comparison with those on the western slope. The annual tree–ring width of males dominated over females on both slopes at first, probably from the time of sexual maturation. However, these differences persisted to the end of the analyzed period only on the poorer western slope. The growth rate of females and males after several years was equal on the eastern slope. Spatial segregation has not been shown, probably due to the homogeneity of the habitat on both slopes. Studies have shown that the decrease of growth rate in J. thurifera females can occur only in the poorer habitat conditions.
The taxonomic position of the population of tree-like, mostly polycormic individuals of pines from the Mshana peat bog in the Gorgany Mountains (East Carpathians, Ukraine) has been studied on the basis of the morphological characteristics of cones and needles, and anatomical characteristics of the needles. These features have been compared with the surrounding Pinus mugo population as well as P. uliginosa, P. mugo, P. sylvestris and P. uncinata from natural populations of the taxa. Tree-like individuals were found to have the most similar needles to P. uliginosa, but most similar cone characteristics to P. mugo. It was concluded, that the tree-like population has a relic character and can present the trace of the early migration of P. uliginosa from the West and its hybridisation with P. mugo.
Zelkova carpinifolia is a relict tree occurring in refugial zones of south-western Eurasia. The main aim of the study was the biometrical comparison of the leaf characteristics of the species sampled in three regions of Transcaucasia. We aimed to test the hypotheses that (1) leaves from vegetative (L) shoots would be larger and more variable than those from fertile (S) shoots, (2) the leaves from the same shoot type express geographic patterns of morphological differentiation, similar to pattern described for genetic markers and (3) to verify the systematic position of Z. hyrcana and Z. carpinifolia subsp. yomraensis. The plant material was collected from 5 populations of Z. carpinifolia, one of Z. hyrcana and one of Z. carpinifolia subsp. yomraensis. The total 1482 leaves, 713 from L- and 769 S-type were measured using 26 characters. Our results show very high level of differences between leaves from the L- and S-type of shoots. The majority of leaf characters did not reveal dependence neither on geographic latitude, longitude and altitude nor on the basic climatic data. The results of multivariate analyses of S leaves revealed three group of populations, namely from (1) Colchis, (2) eastern Caucasus (3) Talysh. Thus, our biometric analyses revealed similar pattern to the haplotypic differentiation of Z. carpinifolia detected using chloroplast markers described in the literature. We did not detected significant differences in the leaf characters between supposed Z. hyrcana and/or Z. carpinifolia subsp. yomraensis, when compared to Z. carpinifolia, thus not confirming their separate taxonomic status.
Three populations of Abies cilicica subsp. isaurica and four of A. cilicica subsp. cilicica were analyzed using 35 morphological and anatomical needle characters with the implementation of multivariate statistical methods to verify the differences between subspecies. Moreover, the possible geographic differentiation of A. cilicica subsp. cilicica populations from the East Taurus and Lebanon Mountains was examined. Abies cilicica subsp. isaurica has been distinguished from A. cilicica subsp. cilicica by its glabrous young shoots and resinous buds. We detected that needles of A. cilicica subsp. isaurica are longer, broader and thicker, with a higher number of stomata rows, and larger cells of the epidermis, hypodermis and endodermis than A. cilicica subsp. cilicica. Additionally, A. cilicica subsp. isaurica needles have frequently rounded to obtuse-acute apex and resinous canals positioned more centrally inside the mesophyll than needles of A. cilicica subsp. cilicica. This indicates that a set of most of the tested needle characters can be used to distinguish the subspecies; however, any of characters enable that when used separately. Morphological and anatomical distinctiveness between these two taxa justify their recognition at the subspecies rank. Additionally, the populations of A. cilicica subsp. cilicica from the East Taurus and Lebanon are morphologically different. This geographic differentiation of populations is congruent with results provided by genetic analyses of nuclear microsatellites markers (nSSR).
Divergence in genetic as well as phenotypic structures can be expected in species with disjunctive geographic ranges and restricted gene flow among isolated populations. Dwarf mountain pine has such a disjunctive geographic range in the mountains of Central Europe. We hypothesised that populations of Pinus mugo from the Giant Mts. differ from Alpine and Carpathian populations to a greater extent than differentiation within these regions; furthermore, these differences would be detectable at both the genetic and phenotypic levels. To verify this hypothesis, the diversity and differentiation within and among eleven populations from the Giant Mts., Carpathians and Alps were analysed using 19 isozyme isozyme loci, 17 needle and 15 cone morphological characters. Moreover, the data on 10 chloroplast microsatellites used in the previous study, were reanalysed. The differences between the three regions were greater than among populations within them. The microsatellites and isozymes clearly differentiated between regions, while in the multivariate analyses of cone and needle characters the Alpine and Carpathian populations were intermingled but distinct from those sampled in the Giant Mts. The significant genetic structuring among regions may result from an ancient fragmentation and long lasting geographic isolation between the Giant Mts., Alps and Tatras. The populations from the Giant Mts., the northernmost within the geographic range of P. mugo, presented lower level of genetic variation then those from the Alps and Carpathians. The pattern of genetic structure observed in dwarf mountain pine may be characteristic of wind-pollinated trees with a disjunctive geographic distribution
