The experiment was carried aut on 110 diary cows of red and white breed, raised on a breeding farm of Jeleniów /near Kudowa/ in the years 1983-1985. The cows were grazed on a pasture-fertilized with P₂O₅, K₂O and N; the dosage applied was: 70, 80 and 150 kg/ha, respectively. The grassland was rich in white clover /30-40%/. The mainstay in the cow's diet during winter time was hay and silage produced from grasses. The following mineral feed and salts were fed to the cows ad libitum: Microfos, MM-B, halite, salt manufactured by a co-operative in Koło, salt from Wieliczka supplemented with microelements, called Wisol-BM. The results obtained in this experiment concur with our earlier observations, proving that bulk feed in 10 times lower in sodium than it is required in the cow's diet. A daily requirement for salt was found to be the dosage of 60 g. Type of salt did not have a crucial effect on the productivity of supplemented cow's.
Botanical Garden-CBDC of the PAS started the conservation programme of genus Secale genetic resources in 1974. Until now more than 2000 accessions have been collected. The rye seed collection contains the modern varieties, primitive local landraces and breeding materials. Seed samples dehydrated to 5-7% moisture content are packed into air tight containers under vacuum and stored in freezers at -25°C. That prolongs significantly the longevity of seed samples. However, the ageing processes are not stopped, so temporary viability control is necessary. The results of viability tests of rye seed samples after 8-12 years of storage are presented. Practically all the samples retained their viability over regeneration standard, i.e. 80%. Pre-harvest conditions visibly affected the viability of rye seed samples at the beginning of storage as well as the rate of their viability decrease. An evaluation of collected materials as a source for breeding programmes is an important factor affecting their utilization. During two seasons the group of 250 local landraces from Turkey were evaluated. Analyzed data of selected morphological characters showed similar distribution of deviations from the standard variety. Results of pathogen resistance evaluation enabled to select the accessions with resistance higher than standard.
