156 Lowland Black and White x charolaise heifer calves were exa mined; they were selected for further reproduction from a hers of fatstock kept in one of the State-owned farms in the Wieprz-Krzna Canal region. Out of 156 heifer calves destined for mating 122 animals were jnade pregnant with the semen of limousine or hereford bulls, that is 78,2%. The mating of heifer calves took place from August 1 to September 15 so that the future calving occurred at the beginning of the pasture season. Out od 115 parturition (7 animals miscarried) 7 were very hard (still-born calves), 22 (19,12%) hard, 15 (13%) light (with the help of 1 person), the remaining 71 animals (61,7%) delivered by themselves on the pasture.
Studies have been carried out in one of the State-owned farms in the Biała Podlaska region on 54 Liwland Black and White heifer calves coming from local cows and on 65 heifer calves bought from the individual farms in the Lublin region at the age of approx. . 1-1,5 months. The body weight of calves was noted on the day they were put in the pens, at the age of 6 months, daily gains and losses of calves in the analysed period, that is starting with the time they were put in the pens till they reached 6 months. It has been shown that transportation of calves and the change from individual keeping and feeding them with whole milk to group keeping causes great stress in purchased calves. These animals were characterized by significantly lower daily gains (by 200 g) in the period tin they were 6 month of age their mortality rate was twice as hign compared with calves coming from their own cows.
