The male subimago of Analetris secundus sp. nov. is described and illustrated from the Eocene Baltic amber. A new species presents the first fossil representative of the previously monotypie genus Analetris Edmunds, 1972. The extant species Analetris eximia Edmunds, 1972 is known from the Northwestern of the North America. Critical characters distinguishing these both species are discussed.
Electroletus soldani gen. and sp. nov. from Eocene Baltic amber is described and illustrated. The presence of an elongate lateroparapsidal suture of the mesonotum, sublateroscutum and submedioscutum of the mesonotum with traces of the pigmented area, a backwards-stretched medially mesonotal suture, the dissimilar claws and a 5-segmented paracercus undoubtedly define the systematic position of Electroletus gen. nov. within the family Ameletidae McCafferty, 1991. The new genus differs from other genera of Ameletidae by combination of the following characters: pterostigmatic area of fore wings with 11-12 simple, not anastomosed veins; cubital field of fore wings with one pair of inter- calaries; tarsi of middle and hind legs are longer than tibiae; tarsal segment I of all legs is the longest; styliger plate with median protuberance. Type specimen belongs to W. Simon’s collection, which is hosted in the Museum für Naturkunde, Institute of Palaeontology, Humboldt University, Berlin.
Burshtynogena fereci gen. and sp. nov. from Eocene Baltic amber is described and illustrated. Burshtynogena gen. nov. differs from other known Heptageniidae genera by the combination of the following characters: pterostigmatic area only with simple, not anastomoused veins; furcasternal protuberances of mesothorax almost rectangular; hind wing narrow (the width/length ratio = 0.45) with well developed venation; tarsal claws dissimilar on all legs; subgenital plate small, narrow, poorly developed, shallow sinuous; subanal plate with slightly concave posterior margin.
Two new species, namely Baetis (Baetis) mirkae sp. nov. (larva, female subimago, and male imago) and Baetis (Rhodobaetis) irenkae sp. nov. (larva and male imago), from Cyprus are described and their critical diagnostic characters illustrated. The former is a representative of the subgenus Baetis s. str. (the B. lutheri species-group) showing close relationships mainly to B. (B.) lutheri Müller-Liebenau, 1967 and B. (B.) vardarensis Ikonomov, 1962; the latter is classified within the subgenus Rhodobaetis Jacob, 2003, being related mainly to B. (R.) ilex Zimmermann, 1978. Affinities of these new species to all representatives of respective related species-group and Rhodobaetis are discussed in detail and brief notes to their biology and distribution are presented. Based on data available so far, a detailed biogeographical analysis directed mainly to chorology and faunistic origin of 8 Palaearctic representatives of the B. lutheri species-group and 26 species of Rhodobaetis (incl. B. irenkae sp. nov. described below) is offered.
The Neotropical mayfly genus Borinquena Traver, 1938 so far comprises three described extant species from the Caribbean basin. Furthermore, three fossil species from Dominican amber have been described in this genus. Based on a single male imago, Borinquena schawallfussi sp. nov. is described in this contribution as the fourth fossil species of Borinquena from Miocene Dominican amber. The new species clearly differs from all other fossil and recent representatives of the genus Borinquena in forewing colouration and venation, hind wing shape and venation, and in the shape of penis lobes and their ventral spines.
The female imago specimen belonging to a new species Baba lapidea gen. and sp. nov. and a new family Babidae fam. nov. from Eocene Baltic amber is described and illustrated. This insects combines characters common with Fimbriatotergaliae (on fore wing MP₂ and CuA curved near base; on hind wing MA lacks triad; first tarsal segment shortened and fused with tibia) with a plesiomorphy never found in Fimbriatotergaliae (mesonotal suture transverse). Possibly, Baba gen. nov. represents a sister taxon of Fimbriatotergaliae Kluge, 2004.
Baetis braaschi ZIMMERMANN, 1980, a little known species of subgenus Rhodobaetis JACOB, 2003 has been redescribed and illustrated. The synonymy of B. braaschi and B. stipposus KLUGE, 1982 has been ascertained, and possible synonymy with B. bisri THOMAS & DIA, 1983 has been discussed. The additional description of winged stages of B. braaschi has been given. The distinguishing characters, which separate these species from other close ones of the subgenus Rhodobaetis, have been analyzed. The generalized data on the species distribution and its natural history has been given.
Baetis (Rhodobaetis) milani sp. n. (larva, as well as reared male and female subimago and imago) is described from numerous localities in foothills and mountains of the Peninsula. Critical distinguishing characters are illustrated and available data on biology and distribution of the new species are summarized. Taxonomic characters of West Palaearctic species of the subgenus Rhodobaetis JACOB, 2003 are discussed in detail.
A metamorphosis of a parasitic chironomid Symbiocladius rhithrogenae (ZAVREL, 1924) infesting nymphs of mayflies of the genera Rhithrogena EATON, 1881 and Ecdyonurus EATON, 1868 in a stream of the Ukrainian Carpathians, is described and illustrated.
