Morphology of the pulmonary valve of chosen species of free-living birds

The aim of the research was to describe the structure of the pulmonary valve. The study was conducted on forty-six hearts of free-living birds of four orders. Out of the examined birds only one Mute Swan from the Anseriformes order had the quadricuspid valve. Other birds had the tricuspid type of the valve. It was observed that Northern Eagle Owls, White-tailed Sea Eagles and Mute Swans have the nodules of the cusps on the free margins of the cusps of the pulmonary valve. New terms were suggested to describe the nodules and the structure of the commissure of the pulmonary valve. Such types of research may link morphological study, clinical in type, with the ecology of birds belonging to various systematic units.

The European bison belongs to endangered species. Its restitution requires a complete knowledge of the structure and function of its genital organs. The aim of this study was a histological and morphometric examination of the uterus of immature and adult females. Material for the study came from 55 females living in the Białowieża Forest. According to the Polish law, the post mortem use of tissues does not require an approval from an ethics committee. The animals were divided into 2 groups: group I included 36 prepubertal females aged from 2 months to 1.5 years, while group II consisted of 19 sexually mature females aged 2 to 20 years. The samples were stained with haematoxylin and eosin (H&E). Histological and morphometric examinations included measurements of the height of the epithelium, thickness of the endometrium, thickness of the myometrium, thickness of the inner and outer muscular layers, and thickness of the perimetrium. The results were analyzed using the Statistica 12.0™ software. Statistically significant differences were found between the two groups in all morphometric parameters examined. The results revealed a high degree of similarity of the histological structure of the uterus between European bison and domestic cattle.

Renesansowa myśl Francisa Bacona na temat łagodzenia cierpienia u pacjentów przyczyniła się do powstania pojęcia eutanazji i jego ewolucji na przestrzeni wieków wraz z podążającą za nią zmianą postaw moralnych i etycznych w medycynie ludzkiej i weterynaryjnej. W XXI wieku trwa spór na temat legalizacji eutanazji u ludzi terminalnie chorych. Z drugiej strony – poprawie ulega jakość i ilość środków nakładanych na opiekę paliatywną. Różne grupy społeczne próbują uzasadnić celowość eutanazji lub nie dopuścić do jej zalegalizowania (Gielen et al. 2009; Łużyński 2011). W świecie zwierząt eutanazję cechuje chęć zniwelowania cierpienia u osobników wyniszczonych bądź w skrajnych przypadkach zagrażających życiu ludzi i innych zwierząt. W obu sytuacjach motywy eutanazji mają uzasadnienie znajdujące się w polskim prawie w tym w Konstytucji RP.
