Three cases of perforating abomasum ulcerations, confirmed post-mortem, were described in HF dairy cows. The animals came from the free-standing maintenance system farms of high productivity. The diagnosis was based on specific clinical, laboratory and post-mortem tests. Chosen hematological parameters, the activity of liver enzymes, bilirubin, total protein and urea concentration as well as the level of Ca, Mg, Pi, K and Na macroelements, were evaluated in the blood of the examined animals. The changes noted in hematological and biochemical blood indexes do not explicitly determine the intensity of pathological (disease) processes within the wall of the abomasums. On the basis of the received results, the conclusion was drawn that an intravital reliable diagnosis (clinical and laboratory) of abomasums ulceration is not possible, especially at the initial stage of the disease, and most cases are identified post-mortem or posts slaughter.
The objective of the studies was to evaluate the influence of a natural preparation supplemented with unsaturated and saturated fatty acids on the clinical features and some biochemical indices in the mares in the last trimester of pregnancy and the first lactation months. The preparation efficacy was assessed in the prophylaxis of energy balance disturbances, with a special concern given to hyperlipaemia in horses. The preparation decreased the concentration of triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol, and cholesterol high density and low-density lipoprotein fractions. No significant changes were recorded in the levels of free fatty acids (FFA) and glucose. In the group of mares without the dietary addition, the TG and FFA levels exceeded the upper limits in some animals. The preparation had a beneficial effect on the energy balance in mares at the enhanced energy metabolism period.
A case of dislocation of the ileus in a 2-day-old foal with special regard to diagnostic methods and therapeutic procedures has been described. Diagnostic procedures included clinical examination, passage of a nasogastric tube, urinary bladder catheterization and laboratory examination (tests) obtaining the measurement of: hematocrit, erythrocyte count, leucocyte count, total protein and albumin concentrations, bilirubin and urea concentrations, activity of AST and ALT. Therapy was based on the administration of NSAID, myorelaxing drugs, acid-base and water-electrolyte balance disorders correction and laparotomy. During the operation a resection of the pathologically transformed part of the ileus was conducted. Moreover, differentiating dislocation of ileus with others diseases like meconium retention and rupture of urinary bladder was described.
