Najwyższą ocenę jakości uzyskały frytki i czipsy wyprodukowane z bulw ziemniaków nawożonych dawką 51 kg Mg·ha-1. Przechowywanie w sposób istotny obniżyło przydatność bulw do obróbki termicznej.
The nutritive value and wholesomeness of carrot are highly appreciated owing to such biologically active compounds as carotenoids, vitamin C and mineral compounds found in its roots. In 2007-2009, field experiments were performed on the effect of foliar fertilisation of carrot with magnesium sulphate during its vegetative growth on selected nutrients (total carotenoids, vitamin C, mineral magnesium). The field experiment was set up in a splitplot design with three replications on light soil, of slightly acid reaction, low in available P and K forms and very low in Mg. Magnesium was applied in rates of 0, 45 and 90 kg MgO ha–1 by spraying carrot plants with a 3% solution during their intensive growth in the vegetative season, accompanied by constant N, P, K fertilisation. The experiment involved five carrot cultivars: medium-late Berjo, and late Flacoro, Karotan, Koral and Perfekcja, all characterized by good storage life. The content of selected nutrients in carrot roots was determined immediately after harvest and after six-month storage in a traditional earthen mound. Foliar application of magnesium significantly increased the nutritive value of roots of the carrot cultivars after harvest, raising the content of total carotenoids, vitamin C and magnesium in edible parts. The rate of 45 kg MgO ha–1 was most favourable. The sixmonth root storage led to a decrease in the biologically active compounds. The recorded loss (mean for cultivars and fertilisation) reached 20% of carotenoids, 50% of vitamin C and 1% of magnesium. The highest nutritive value was determined for roots of the cultivars Karotan and Perfekcja and the lowest one in roots of cv. Flacoro.
Storage is one of the most important and, at the same time, most difficult stages in potato production and potato economy. During long-term storage, potato tubers are affected by processes leading to quantitative changes. The present three-year field experiment (2003-2005) investigated the effect of varied mineral fertilization (N, K and Mg against the fixed P dose) and storage (3 and 6 months) on the occurrence of quantitative potato tuber losses. The research involved mid-early cultivars: Bila and Triada. The samples were stored in a storage chamber for 3 and 6 months (temperature +4oC, relative humidity 95%). The present research shows that natural losses were affected by all the experimental factors. The K and Mg fertilizer doses significantly decreased the amount of fresh weight losses as compared with the control; as for potassium, the most favourable in that respect was the dose of 160 kg K2O ha–1, and for magnesium – 60 kg MgO ha–1. Nitrogen fertilization, on the other hand, demonstrated a negative effect on the amount of losses throughout the storage period. The highest fresh weight losses occurred after 6 months of storage and for the nitrogen, potassium and magnesium fertilization experiments they reached 8.9, 6.4 and 7.3%, respectively. The best storage life was reported for cv. Triada potato tubers – potassium fertilization and cv. Bila – magnesium fertilization.
One of the top objectives of the table and food processing potato production is good tuber quality. The fact that potatoes are grown for a number of different uses makes the quality requirements high, yet also varied, both in terms of morphological traits and the chemical composition. Throughout the production cycle, potato storage is the most difficult stage of maintaining good quality of tubers. During long storage, tubers are affected by processes leading to quantitative and qualitative changes. The present three-year field experiment (2003-2005) investigated the effect of varied mineral fertilisation (N, K and Mg against a fixed P dose) applied over the plant vegetation period and the influence of storage (3 and 6 months) on the content of dry matter and starch in tubers of mid-early potato cultivars: Bila and Triada. The samples were stored in a storage chamber for 3 and 6 months (temperature +4oC, relative humidity 95%). The content of dry matter and starch was significantly affected by both the fertilisation and the storage time. With increasing N, K, Mg doses, a significant increase in the content of dry matter appeared, as compared with the control, and its highest content was reported for the fertilisation with 100 kg of nitrogen (3.5% increase), 80 kg of potassium (7.7% increase) and 100 kg of magnesium per hectare (6.2% increase). However, as for the content of starch, the doses of 100 kg of nitrogen, 160 kg of potassium and 100 kg of magnesium per hectare turned out to be the most favourable. The losses of dry matter and starch in potato tubers calculated from the balance were the highest after 6 months of storage and accounted for 8.1 and 15.4% for the magnesium experiment, 6.6 and 10.1% for the nitrogen experiment, 6.7 and 7.9% for the potassium experiment, respectively.
Badania przeprowadzono w oparciu o wieloletnie statyczne doświadczenie polowe założone w 1979 roku w Stacji Badawczej Wydziału Rolniczego UTP w Wierzchucinku (woj. kujawsko-pomorskie), w trzyletnim uproszczonym zmianowaniu: ziemniak – żyto ozime – żyto ozime. Materiał badawczy stanowiły bulwy wczesnej, jadalnej odmiany ziemniaka Bila, uprawianej w pierwszym roku dziesiątej rotacji (2006 r.). Czynnikami doświadczenia było nawożenie organiczne (bez obornika i z obornikiem w ilości 30 t∙ha⁻¹) i nawożenie azotem – cztery dawki (0, 60, 120, 180 kg∙ha⁻¹).
Fertilization is one of the factors of agro-technical practice that determines potato yield volume and quality. This research involved the early table potato cultivar Bila grown in the first year of the tenth (2006) and the eleventh rotation cycle (2009) in a long-term, static field experiment (set up in 1979). A three-year simplified crop rotation included potato – winter rye 1 – winter rye 2. The experimental factors covered: I organic fertilization (without FYM and with FYM at the amount of 30 t ha-1), II nitrogen doses 0, 60, 120, 180 kg N ha-1 under potato and 0, 40, 80, 120 kg N ha-1 under rye. The aim of the present research was to evaluate the yielding and content of selected chemical components of the tubers of cv. Bila potato grown in a simplified system depending on different organic and mineral fertilization regimes, implemented for many years. The results show a significantly positive effect of FYM and nitrogen fertilization on the tuber yield volume and on the content of total protein and magnesium, as well as a negative effect on the content of nitrates(V). However, FYM fertilization increased but nitrogen fertilization decreased the content of ascorbic acid. The highest nutritive value of tubers was achieved after the application of 60 kg N ha-1. However, a dose higher than 120 kg N ha-1 applied with FYM increased the content of nitrates(V) above the toxicity threshold (200 mg NO3 ¯ kg-1 of the fresh product).
The present study of three vegetation periods evaluated the enzymatic browning process of two different commodities, carrot roots and apples. The influence of the genetic potential (effect of genus and cultivar), of magnesium fertilization is case of carrot and of storage (in case of carrot 6 months in a traditional natural mound and in case of apple 6 months under ultra low oxygen (ULO) conditions) were investigated. In the case of carrot 5 different cultivars were investigated, middle late 'Berjo', late: 'Flacoro', 'Karotan', 'Koral', 'Perfekcja', and magnesium doses (0, 45, 90 kg∙ha-1 of MgO) by constant fertilization with nitrogen (70 kg∙ha-1), phosphorus (80 kg∙ha-1 of P2O5), and potassium (100 kg∙ha-1 of K2O). In October harvested roots were stored for 6 months in the traditional natural mound. In the case of apple fruits seven different cultivars were used: 'Elstar', 'Gloster', 'Honeygold', 'Idared', 'Jonagored', 'Ligol', and 'Szampion', from the commercial Agricultural and Fruit Farm Klimkiewicz, Wtelno (Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship) using integrated horticulture production procedures. Apple fruits were stored under ULO conditions for 6 months (>2% O2, <2% CO2, 1.5-2.0°C and 95-96% RH). Susceptibility of commodities was evaluated directly after harvest and after the 6 months of storage using collorimetrically determination method at 475 nm. The evaluation of the enzymatic browning process in carrot roots and apple fruits revealed significant dependency on the used plant material (genus). Carrot roots were generally less susceptible to enzymatic browning compared to the apple fruits. Leaf application of magnesium fertilization, especially at the dose of 90 kg MgO per 1 ha inhibited the browning process. Storage time of 6 months in the mound promoted discoloration of carrot roots and thus negatively influenced their quality. In the case of apple fruits the appropriate choice of cultivar was most important for limiting the enzymatic browning process, which is especially important when selecting raw material for juice production. A low susceptibility to enzymatic browning was found in fruits of cv. 'Elstar', whereas the cv. 'Honeygold' was most susceptible. Changes in the susceptibility to the browning processes of fruit flesh after storage were statistically significant, however quite small in comparison to the values measured directly after harvest.
Yield amount, maturity stage, morphological as well as biological properties of carrot roots are cultivar-dependent. In 2007-2009, field experiments involving foliar fertilization of carrot with magnesium sulphate (acrid salts) on yield and selected yield constituents (dry matter, monosaccharides and total sugars) of carrot storage roots were conducted. Magnesium was applied in doses of 0, 45 and 90 kg MgO ha–1 in the form of 3% sprays during the intensive growth of carrot. The tested carrot belonged to five cultivars: medium- late Berjo and late Flacoro, Karotan, Koral and Perfekcja, all characterized by good shelf life. The yields of carrot storage roots depended on a cultivar and foliar fertilization with magnesium. The cultivar Flacoro gave the highest yield of 60.82 t ha–1 and cv. Karotan – lowest (51.40 t ha–1). The application of foliar magnesium fertilization during cultivation in the doses of 45 and 90 kg MgO ha–1 caused a significant increase of root yield of about 4.2 and 8.7%, respectively. The content of dry matter, reducing sugars and total sugars was determined in carrot roots immediately after harvest and after six months of storage. Regardless of the experimental factors, storage roots of cv. Karotan contained the highest amount of dry matter (138.7 g kg–1), reducing sugars (25.2 g kg–1) and of total sugars (76.8 g kg–1) based on fresh matter. Increasing fertilization with magnesium led to a significant increase in the content of all the analyzed constituents in carrot storage roots. The most successful was the dose of 45 kg MgO ha–1, which caused the highest significant increment in dry matter, reducing and total sugars. The six-month storage of carrot roots caused a 2.6% increase in dry matter and an 11.2% rise in total sugars, but decreased reducing sugars by 11.1% (mean results for all cultivars and fertilization variants).
Among methods for stimulation of plant growth an essential role can be played by seaweed biostimulants. The aim of the study was to assess the response of onion to the method of application of the seaweed biostimulant Kelpak SL. Doses of the seaweed extract applied from the three-leaf stage amounted to 3, 3 + 2, 3 + 2 + 2 dm3 ha-1, and from the four-leaf stage 2, 2 + 2, 2 + 2 + 2 dm3 ha-1, for a single, double and triple application, respectively. The biostimulant applied from the three-leaf stage increased the chlorophyll index after double or triple application, whereas applied from the four-leaf stage, also after a single application. The highest increases in the fresh weight yield of bulbs as well as fresh weight of roots resulted from the triple application of the biostimulant from the three- or four-leaf stages. Each dm3 of the biostimulant caused an increase in the fresh weight yield of bulbs by 0.76 t ha-1, and each additional application resulted in an increase in yield by 1.76 t ha-1.
