During the studies conducted in the years 2004–2005, in the Experimental Farm „Felin” of the University of Life Sciences in Lublin we assessed the effect of irrigation and plant density upon the yield and selected technological features (mean weight of root and the occurrence of empty spaces) in a few currently grown celeriac cultivars. A significant influence of the examined factors upon the quantity and quality of celeriac yield was demonstrated. On average, for the study years, the yield of non-watered plants ranged from 34.7 to 48.8 t ha⁻¹ and the yield of watered plants – from 47.1 to 66.3 t ha⁻¹. The increased plant density from 37.0 thousand pcs. to 55.6 thousand pcs. ha⁻¹ enabled us to obtain greater yield of non-watered plants by 15.6%, and of watered plants – by 21.5%. The examined factors affected the mean weight of root in the assessed celeriac cultivar, the sizes of empty spaces occurring in them, as well as the participation of roots with empty spaces in the marketable yield.
The experiments were carried out in 2004-2005 in The Experimental Farm Felin, Agricultural University in Lublin. The seedling was set into the field on 15 May 2004 and 12 May 2005. The first harvest of leaves was made on 30 July, second - 27 October. Plants were irrigated using dropping lines. Cultivation of leaf celery with no irrigation gave leaf yield at the level of 5.2-6.34 kg/m2; use of irrigation elevated it to 7.70-11.97 kg/m2. Closer spacing between leaf celery seedlings caused a significant increase of leaf yield. The highest yield of leaves was obtained from Safir cv.
The chemical composition of leaf celery leaf blades and leaf stalks was determined in the studies carried out in 2001-2002 and 2005. The leaf blades contained 19.0-19.7% of dry matter, 17.8-19.9 mg • 100g1 of vitamin C, 63.9-68.3 mg • 100g1 of chlorophyll a, and 32.4-33.1 mg • 100g-' of chlorophyll b. The content of essential oil in the leaf blades was 0.26-0.43%, and 0.09-0.25% in leaf stalks. The most important compounds of leaf celery oil were limonene (57.6%) and pseudo-limonene (22.7%).
The influence of seed germination dynamics on selected features of the seedling of 4 tomato cultivars (Beta, Betalux, Promyk, New Yorker) meant for field cultivation were investigated. It was shown "that flowering was the earliest in combinations with plants received from the seeds of the fastest germination, while the greatest delay of flowering was observed in plants received from the seeds of the longest germination (after 10 days). Plants grown from the seeds which had germinated the fastest were significantly higher, had greater average number of leaves, and had greater mass than plants from the seeds germinating longer. Further observations carried out at the moment of flowering of plants of all combinations did not show any significant differences in terms of investigated features except average height of plants.
The aim of the present study was to determine the relation between the quality of seed germination and morphological differentiation of seedlings of the studied tomato cultivars. The seeds of very early tomato cultivars (Beta, Betalux, Promyk) compared to the semi-early New Yorker cultivar treated as control were subjected to evaluation. It was found out that their germination rate significantly affected the quantity of obtained seedlings. The seedlings grown from seeds that germinated after 5 days were significantly higher than those that germinated after 7 or 10 days. They also had higher number of leaves, larger diameter of root collar and higher fresh mass.
