Addition of 0.01–0.2 mM methyl salicylate (MeSA) to the culture media, the antioxidative capacities of maca fresh calli were increased and were 1.19–1.88 times of the control. But MeSA inhibited maca cell growth and this negative effect was dose-dependent. The dry weights of maca calli were 0.60–0.95 times of the control when addition of 0.01–0.2 mM MeSA to the culture media. Elicited by 0.05 mM MeSA, the total phenolic contents in maca calli increased and were 1.25–1.37 times of those in the control in the period from the 10th to the 20th culture day. H₂O₂ and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents increased as well. At the same time, the activities of antioxidative enzymes had corresponding changes. In conclusions, the antioxidative capacity of maca calli could be enhanced by addition of MeSA to the culture media. Considering the increase of antioxidative capacity and inhibition of maca cell growth, 0.05 mM MeSA was optimal concentration.
Marine economy is a new economic form, emphasizing new development concept, new operation mechanism and management mode. In recent years, marine economy shows rapid growth, and marine industry presents a clustering development trend. The industrial linkage effect, industrial agglomeration effect and industrial radiation effect of the marine industrial cluster are important motive forces for the development of coastal cities. The marine industrial cluster takes coastal cities as the development platform and space, while the coastal cities achieve rapid and sustainable development based on the marine industrial cluster. The synergetic and coupling development of the marine industrial cluster and coastal cities is an important way for the promotion of industrial competitiveness and urban competitiveness. This paper developed a measure to identify the marine industrial cluster, designed the evaluation index of coupling of marine industrial cluster and coastal cities development from two perspectives of industrial linkage and spatial agglomeration, taking Shandong province, a typical coastal province in China, as an example, it studied the situation of the marine industrial cluster based on input-output data and data of marine enterprises of coastal cities, based on which it explored the coupling relationship between marine industrial cluster and coastal cities of Shandong province
The exquisitely preserved longipterygid enantiornithine Rapaxavis pani is redescribed here after more extensive preparation. A complete review of its morphology is presented based on information gathered before and after preparation. Among other features, Rapaxavis pani is characterized by having an elongate rostrum (close to 60% of the skull length), rostrally restricted dentition, and schizorhinal external nares. Yet, the most puzzling feature of this bird is the presence of a pair of pectoral bones (here termed paracoracoidal ossifications) that, with the exception of the enantiornithine Concornis lacustris, are unknown within Aves. Particularly notable is the presence of a distal tarsal cap, formed by the fusion of distal tarsal elements, a feature that is controversial in non−ornithuromorph birds. The holotype and only known specimen of Rapaxavis pani thus reveals important information for better understanding the anatomy and phylogenetic relationships of longipterygids, in particular, as well as basal birds as a whole.
The aluminum (Al) tolerance of saffron (Crocus sativus L.) in hydroponics and the method of improving Al tolerance were investigated. Compared with the Al-free control, saffron root elongation was decreased by 59.3 and 75% at 0.05 and 0.2 mM Al stress, respectively. At 0.5 mM Al stress, the root elongation was inhibited completely. Addition of 1 mM polyamines improved saffron root growth markedly at 0.2 mM Al stress. Putrescine (Put) showed better amelioration effect than spermidine (Spd) and spermine (Spm). The root elongation in Put treatment was only 15% lower than that of Al-free control. The alleviation of Al rhizotoxicity by polyamines might be attributed to lower Al content in the root tips, and subsequent less lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress. Higher ctivities of amine oxidases and Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content might decrease the effects of Spd and Spm on alleviating oxidative damage compared with that of Put.
Background: The aim of the study was to investigate the changes of blood flow signal in residual cancer after ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) treatment of rabbit liver cancer over time, and to analyse the correlation between changes in blood flow signal and changes in hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in residual cancer tissue after RFA. Materials and methods: One hundred and ten rabbits were randomly selected, VX2 tumour cells were implanted subcutaneously, tumour cells were implanted in liver. Ninety rabbits were divided into three groups: Group 1 — untreated controls, Group 2 — RFA group, Group 3 — surgical resection group. Tumour size, blood flow signal, microvessel density (MVD) in liver cancer were assessed. Results: Correlation of HIF-1α, VEGF, MMP-9 mRNA and protein expressions with blood flow signal in residual cancer were observed. Liver tumour was 2.3 ± 0.32 cm, significant differences in the grade of blood flow signal were noted among different time points (days 0, 3, 7, and 14; p < 0.05). Significant differences were also observed between the surgical resection and RFA groups at the same time points (p < 0.05). The MVD in the RFA group was lower than that in the control group, but higher than that in the surgical resection group. The immunohistochemical scores for VEGF and MMP-9 in the RFA group were lower than those in the control group, but higher than those in the surgical resection group. The grade of ultrasound blood flow signal was positively correlated with the expression of two angiogenesis-related factors, VEGF and MMP-9, and the MVD in the control, RFA, and surgical resection groups. Conclusions: There is a higher risk of tumour recurrence with RFA than with surgical resection. (Folia Morphol 2020; 79, 1: 71–78)
In order to investigate the concentrations of selenium (Se) in plants of the Dashan Region, a typical Se-rich area of China, and to illuminate the daily dietary Se intake of residents in this region, 83 crop samples and 144 Chinese herb samples were collected. Total Se was analyzed in the edible portion of crops and the medical portion of Chinese herbs. The average concentrations of Se ranged from 100 to 3,100 μg kg⁻¹ (dry weight/DW) in different crops and from 20 to 1,500 μg kg⁻¹ in the Chinese herbs (DW). The crop that contained the highest concentrations of Se was radish, while maize contained the lowest levels. For the Chinese herbs, the highest concentrations of Se were found in Rumex japonicas, while Cape jasmine contained the lowest levels of Se. The average enrichment coefficients (ECs) were 6.1-300% in crops, and 1.6⁻¹17% in Chinese herbs. Among the crops, radish had the highest EC (300%), while pumpkin had the lowest (6.1%). Among the Chinese herbs, Sapium sebiferum had the highest EC (117%), while Dicranopteris dichotoma had the lowest (1.6%). Based on the composition of residents’ daily diets, the estimated daily Se intake from crops was 282±20 μg day⁻¹, and was about 5 times higher than the RDA value suggested by WHO (55 μg day⁻¹). Although no selenosis incidents have occurred in the Dashan Region to date, the potential health risk caused by chronic exposure to high levels of Se cannot be ignored.
The traditional CaCO₃-based fermentation process generates huge amount of insoluble waste. To solve this problem, we have developed an efficient and green D-lactic acid fermentation process by using ammonia as neutralizer. The 106.7 g/l of D-lactic acid production and 0.89 g/g of consumed sugar were obtained by Sporolactobacillus inulinus CASD with a high optical purity of 99.7% by adding 100 mg/l betaine in the simple batch fermentation. The addition of betaine was experimentally proven to protect cells at high concentration of ammonium ion, increase D-lactate dehydrogenase specific activity and thus promote the production of D-lactic acid.
We report a straightforward and widely applicable cryopreservation method for Lilium shoot tips. This method uses adventitious shoots that were induced from leaf segments cultured for 4 weeks on a shoot regeneration medium containing 1 mg/l α-naphthaleneacetic acid and 0.5 mg/l thidiazuron. Shoot tips (1.5–2 mm in length) including 2–3 leaf primordia were precultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS; 1962) medium with 0.5 M sucrose for 1 day and then treated with a loading solution containing 0.4 M sucrose and 2 M glycerol for 20 min, followed by a Plant Vitrification Solution 2 (PVS2) treatment for 4 h at 0°C. Dehydrated shoot tips were transferred onto 2.5 μl PVS2 droplets on aluminum foil strips, prior to a direct immersion into liquid nitrogen for 1 h. Frozen shoot tips were re-warmed in MS medium containing 1.2 M sucrose for 20 min at room temperature, followed by post-thaw culture for shoot regrowth. Shoot regrowth levels ranged from 42.5 % for L. longiflorum × Oriental ‘Triumphator’ to 87.5 % for L. Oriental hybrid ‘Siberia’, with a mean shoot regrowth level of 67.1 % across the six diverse Lilium genotypes tested. Histological observations found that the survival patterns were similar in cryopreserved shoot tips of ‘Triumphator’ and ‘Siberia’. Assessments using inter-simple sequence repeat markers found no differences in regenerants recovered from the control stock cultures and from cryopreserved shoot tips in ‘Triumphator’ and ‘Siberia’. This Lilium droplet-vitrification cryopreservation method is efficient, simple and widely applicable for the long-term conservation of lily genetic resources.
