Magnesium is a widely used component in high-energy compositions. Mixtures containing this metal can be found in show and military pyrotechnics, rocket propellants and various explosive masses. Magnesium containing compositions have high combustion temperature, which allows one to achieve the desired special effect. Two important stages in designing new high-energy mixtures, i.e. compatibility of substances and optimal composition, were described. The calculations were based on mixtures containing magnesium. In line with the standard STANAG 4147, using differential scanning calorimetry, compatibilities of mixtures of magnesium with octogen (HMX) and magnesium with hekzaazahekzanitroizowurzitane (CL-20) were examined. Magnesium is compatible with these nitroamines. An optimal composition which ensures the maximum combustion temperature and specific impulse was determined using the calculation programme isp2001. The optimum composition of the Mg : HMX composition burns at a lower temperature than the Mg : CL-20 mixture. The combustion temperature was 3493K for the former mixture and 3807K for the latter one. The specific impulse determined for both compositions was 273s. The specific impulse was established for mixtures with different shares of magnesium. The mixture containing in octogen reached the maximum specific impulse at 5% Mg, while the mixture containing CL-20 reached the highest specific impulse at 15% of this metal. The dependence of the specific impulse of rocket propellant containing polybutadiene with terminal hydroxyl groups (HTPB), ammonium perchlorate and magnesium was examined. The maximum value of the impulse increases with a decreasing amount of the binder. When another binder such as for poly(glycidyl azide) (GAP) was used, a reverse relationship was observed. The specific impulse increased with an increased binder content. The influence of various oxidants on the combustion temperature of pyrotechnic mixtures was defined. The highest combustion temperature was achieved for compositions with the magnesium content in the range of 20 to 45%. The effect on combustion temperature of the oxidants polytetrafluoroethylene, potassium chlorate and iron oxide was compared.
Besides their structural catalytic and diverse regulatory functions, proteins are also precursors of many important biological compounds essential for normal functioning of humans. Many of these compounds may be used as markers for identification of specific pathological states. A comprehensive knowledge about the metabolism of salivary proteins and the mechanisms of action of their metabolites allowed the development of effective treatment for many disorders. However, it should not be forgotten that in some pathological conditions, these compounds not only could be involved in the pathogenesis but also could be used as tool in the prediction of many diseases. This paper is a review of the published literature on selected salivary proteins in the context of the physiological processes of the human body and chosen chronic disorders, such as diabetes, diabetic nephropathy, mucositis, oral mycoses and caries.
Introduction. Self-treatment, defined as application of drugs without prescription without consulting your doctor has become a common phenomenon. Easy access to this group of pharmaceutical. advertising campaigns and lack of awareness of adverse effects as a result of incorrect application makes drugs without prescription the medications which have become our first choice. The aim of the study is to assess the problem of the use of over the counter (OTC) drugs by young people living in the Silesian Voivodeship. Material and methods. The study included 180 persons from the Silesian voivodeship at the age of 18-30. The research tool was an author’s, anonymous questionnaire. The questions included within it concerned, among others: frequency, form and side effects of drugs applied without prescription. Results. Despite the fact that the majority of respondents (57%) assess their health state as good, the overwhelming number of people (91%) report applying medications without a prescription. The most popular OTC pharmaceutical products include painkillers and vitamins. One in five respondents (20%) admits that he or she consumes more medication than it is recommended in the package leaflet. Conclusions. Very good and good health state declared by the respondents does not exclude accepting their medication without prescription. In case of treatment of intermittent or mild symptoms, the use of medications without a prescription – saves patient’s time and unburdens health care system. This phenomenon, however, is a challenge for the public health sector. Actions must be undertaken which are aimed at raising consumers-patients’ awareness regarding the dangers posed by improper use of OTC drugs.
