The Voivodship Commission of Natural Conservation in Warsaw has designed a natural reserve at Skarpa Ursynowska. This part of the capital includes the largest biologically active areas which are of importance not only to the environment of Mokotów district but also to the whole of Warsaw and Mazowsze region. They should be set up in a way to maximise the benefits of their natural values. Such an objective can be achieved by implementing a concept of Lasek Rozkosz reserve. This article provides a detailed account of the proposal.

Gródek Leśny is a hill in the forest complex near Przysucha (Masovian Voivodship). At its foot, Radomka, a tributary of the Vistula River, has its springs. Archaeological studies indicate that in Gródek there are remnants of the Slavic sanctuary dating back to 6th-9th centuries which could have been one of the religious centres of a Vistula tribe. It was a solar sanctuary, were gods of farmers were worshipped. Establishing a landscape park in that area would protect the archaeological station, thus enabling further studies. The proposed park should include the springs and Radomka broads, an extensive forested area with valuable natural resources, and a site of 1863 uprising and II World War fights.
The author characterizes the western Warsaw district and adjacent areas of the Mazovian Plains, which are links of a natural buffer zone for Warsaw urban capital and which have a significant impact on its life and development. Apart from its natural and health-protecting functions, it also performs important cultural, social and housing functions. That is why this area should not be treated fragmentarily; together its parts are of unique value. According to the author, establishing an Association (Agreement) of Communities in this area and proper profiling of the work by environmental organizations active there is necessary for its proper development und use.

The southern district of Warsaw connected with Polish and European history, classified as Western Wilanów in administrative terms, represents exceptionally precious natural and cultural values, including the historic palace and orchard complexes in the districts of Wilanów, Natolin and Ursynów. Instead of managing this area in compliance with the principles of the sustainable development of Warsaw, local authorities have agreed to the construction of commercial and residential buildings and consented to crossing this area the Berlin-Moscow highway. The author proves the adverse impacts of these decisions.
Polish parliamentary coalitions and governments change, but the pressure to cross Warsaw and its natural environment by Berlin- Moscow highway (A-2 route) still maintains. It continues although it is obvious that the highway will harm the city and the alternatives are suggested. The article deals with this issue in detail.
Waste disposal combustion technologies applied to-date are environmentally arduous and troublesome. They do not guarantee environmental safety. The plasma treatment technology can be a radical change. It derives from research conducted by US NASA. In the early 90-s, it led to applying the plasmatron for waste utilisation. The author deals in detail with the new method.
Current cities, increasingly growing and dense in terms of the population and infrastructure, trigger harmful effects having an adverse impact on the human health and living conditions, culture and on the city itself. The author presents a number of examples. Due to this, projects to remedy these nuisances and implementation of solutions related to the utilisation of the natural environment proposed in the article are required.
Graveyards of chemical waste sprung up particularly rapidly during the era of large industrial investment in the 1970’s. Official statistics mention 297 chemical waste graveyards in Poland (the number and location of illegal sites is unknown), which are hazardous to both humans and animals. According to the National Environmental Protection Inspection, most of the sites are not adequately protected and a large number of them have no documentation at all. The task of preventing the contamination of the environment and poisoning of people belongs to the central and local authorities.
The EU environmental policy had undergone long and difficult transformation before it formed a relatively coherent program and implementation concept. The concept includes crucial strategic elements targeted at introducing changes intrinsic for a sustainable civilisation. The author discusses the most significant EU documents: Rome Treaties, five subsequent action programs, Single European Act, Dublin Declaration, Green Book on transport and Maastricht Treaty.

The author deals with the highway lobby which is siting the Berlin—Moscow highway (A-2) through the Warsaw conurbation, despite high imperatives and modern global trends. Local governments, housing cooperatives, property owners, environmental organizations, specialists involved in nature conservation and protection of monuments, health workers and army representatives object to the higway construction concept. Their protest is not limited to opposition: an alternative proposal for collisionless and advantageous route for this section of the higway has been developed. The author justifies this proposal.

Polish environmental policy has many weaknesses and backlogs. They have to be eliminated. The author presents initiatives in this field. The first one is the establishment of the Ecological Council, „Environment and Development”. The second one: a scientific conference devoted to waste management, organised by the Polish Commercial Chamber, „Ekorozwój”, and by the Radom Technical University.
