Polish State Forest manages in the most number of districts - 232, Polish Hunting Association in 46 and Agency of the State Agricultural Property in 16. Three Forest Faculties of Polish Universities from Poznan, Krakow and Warsaw manage in other three Game Management Centers. Functions of Game Management Centers arise directly from article no 28 of The Act of Hunting Law. The realization of functions is connected with their role and importance in hunting economy in the country. The founding for management in these Centers comes from organized hunting in districts. Game Management Centers provide safety and stabilize the management of game populations in case of their physical condition and optimal number.
Trichinellosis - history, current status, new threats. The paper presents the epizootic situation of trichinellosis in historical terms, the present state, as well as emerging new threats. At the turn of the last few years, new species of trichinella species have emerged, as well as the spectrum of species of wild and domestic animals, which are a potential source of parasite transmission, has been widespread. Quite a significant threat is the problem of increasing occurrence of trichinella at herbivorous animals, which until recently were mostly treated ex officio as trichinella-free. The changing epizootiological image of trichinella makes it seems necessary now to intensify the preventive measures in the prevention of meat of all species susceptible to trichinella by means of etching method. Such activities should guarantee the safety of marketed animal origin food and thus effectively reduce the epidemiological risk.
Characteristic of population and working of earthdogs in Poland in 2001-2007. The aim of this paper is to describe the population and working abilities of earthdogs in Poland during 7 years period: from 2001 to 2007. In Poland 15 breeds are considered as earthdogs: 9 Dachshunds and 6 Terriers. Data concerning number of registered dogs of each breed, reproductive characteristics and the results of field trials for earthdogs were analyzed. The most popular breed among all earthdogs is Dachshund wire hair standard and among all Terriers: German Terrier. The population of all Dachshunds breeds was decreasing from year to year. Terrier population was increasing slightly, mainly due to huge interest in Jack Russell Terrier. Both trends are significant. Other Terriers seem to have stable populations. The most numerous breeds have also the highest reproductive characteristics. The highest number of litters and puppies born was observed for German Terrier and Dachshund wire hair standard. Each year more Dachshunds than Terriers participated in earthdogs field trials and obtained better grades. The use of earthdogs should be promoted as a useful tool to reduce the fox population in Poland.
We hypothesized that the flight activity of bats in forests is higher in parts closer to edges due to the presence of species roosting in trees and foraging mostly outside as well as those coming to forage from outside. The aim of our study was to test this expectation using bat netting on roads in a forest belt 4–5 km wide in Kampinos National Park near Warsaw (central Poland). Tree stands were mostly coniferous. Ten full-night study sessions were done between the end of July and the beginning of September in the years 2007–2009. During each session, bats were netted at two sites situated in two zones designated as “edge” (100– 500 m from forest edge) and “interior” (1750–2250 m from forest edge). The study revealed twelve species, among which Eptesicus serotinus (Schreber), Nyctalus noctula (Schreber) and Barbastella barbastellus (Schreber) were by far most abundant. Total bat abundance recorded at ten pairs of netting sites differed significantly between the edge zone (ca. 2.5 times higher numbers) and the interior zone. Among individual species, a statistically important difference was shown only for Plecotus auritus (L.), which was more abundant close to the forest edge, though a similar tendency was noted in other species, mostly E. serotinus. The frequency of each species in the bat assemblage as well as species diversity of bats flying along forest roads did not differ between the two zones.
30 (15 ♂ and 15 ♀) carcasses of 16-weeksold farmed pheasants were examined for meat properties and the content of fatty acids. All carcasses were dissected and 70g samples of meat tissue were taken from breast and thigh muscles. The thighs of males were significantly greater than those in females, but the perirenal fat depots were larger in females. There was a significant difference in the mass of the heart between sexes. The content of fatty acids differed signifi cantly in male and female muscles. The muscle tissues of males contained more mono- and polyunsaturated but not the saturated fatty acids, than those of female pheasants.
The experimental material included grey partridges Perdix perdix planned for re-introduction into the natural habitat, reared at the Center of Game Breeding on the area of Mazovia Province. 10 hens and 10 roosters were selected for slaughter. After exsanguination, plucking and evisceration, the birds were cooled for 24 h to a temperature of 4°C. The carcasses were subjected to dissection to enable determination of dressing percentage and calculation in the carcass contents of: breast muscles, leg muscles, adipose fat and giblets. The study showed no effect of sex on results of slaughter analysis of grey partridge.
