Investing activities of wood sector in Poland in the face of global crisis

Companies’ reaction to crisis events occurring in economy is, as a rule, decreasing operating costs and constraining investment projects. It results mainly from the passive attitude of the management in the face of the crisis. Only companies in good financial condition can invest in times of economic stagnation. The following article presents changes in the level of financial outlays for investment in wood sector companies (with the following businesses: paper and paper products manufacture, wood, cork, straw and wicker products manufacture, furniture production) compared to processing industry.

Innovative activity is a key aspect in functioning of a company. Growth of competition resulting from market globalization, as well as a growing number of new customer expectations in the economic crisis force companies to look for new innovative solutions. However, deciding on innovation introduction needs to be economically justified from the perspective of the company. In the paper, economic aspects of innovative activity of companies functioning in the wood sector, compared to processing industry, have been presented.

The article presents an analysis of change trends in export of wood industry products in Poland; the paper draws attention to its share in the total value of export. The research covers the years 2008-2012. Comparative analyses have been conducted into the field contrasting Poland with countries of east-central Europe and the EU countries. The paper also presents a ranking of the main customers of Polish wood and wood products. Moreover, the analysis covers export structure of some of the most significant wood products, as well as price indexes as compared to industrial processing.

The paper presents changes in the level of innovation in Polish service companies allowing for the regional division of the country. The article covers the scale of innovative activity and its influence on economic results of the analysed economic subjects. The effectiveness of these actions are evaluated on the basis of the share of revenues from sales of new or significantly improved products in total sales as well as financial outlays on innovative activity. The timeframe of the research comprised the years 2010-2014.

Kryzys gospodarczy, który rozpoczął się w Stanach Zjednoczonych w 2007 r. przyczynił się do załamania koniunktury gospodarczej w wielu krajach. Zjawisko globalizacji rynków spotęgowało negatywne konsekwencje tej sytuacji kryzysowej. W obliczu tych wydarzeń problematyka zadłużenia przedsiębiorstw nabiera szczególnego znaczenia. Utrzymywanie bezpiecznego poziomu zobowiązań krótko- i długoterminowych ma wpływ na wypłacalność przedsiębiorstw, która nierzadko stanowi o ich przetrwaniu na rynku. W opracowaniu zaprezentowano ocenę poziomu zadłużenia 559 przedsiębiorstw rolnych w latach 2010-2011. Analizę porównawczą przeprowadzono w wyróżnionych grupach przedsiębiorstw, a kryterium ich podziału stanowił poziom utrzymywanego w nich poziomu zatrudnienia.

The article covers the changes in the level of innovation in Polish industrial companies accounting for the administrative division. The paper presents the scale of innovative activity and its influence on economic results of the analysed economic subjects. The effectiveness of these actions has been evaluated based on the share of revenues of industrial enterprises from sales of new or significantly improved products in total revenues from sales and expenditures on innovative activity.
