Professor Sadowski, the Director of the Institute of Cardiology in Warsaw explains the difference between health promotion and prophylaxis. He next emphasises that at the end of the 20th century technology has eliminated the need of hard physical labour for many residents of urban and rural areas. This caused many adverse effects in the function of human organism. They manifest in the impairment of physical development of children and young people, diminished muscular strength and overall physical performance, less tolerance of the circulatory system to physical effort, tendency to increased blood clotting and decreased fibrinolysis. Having little physical exercise impairs the resistance to stress and infections, promotes obesity, accelerates ageing, and impedes intellectual capabilities. The causal treatment for all these disorders is physical exercise. Everyone should know what is beneficial to one's health and what undermines it, should choose a sound life style, but should also have proper social and economic conditions to cultivate it.

Allergies rise dramatically and not in line with the supposed causes, i.e. the degradation of air, soil and water, food products, save smoking, sick house syndrome and antibiotics abuse. Currently some 10-20 % of the population suffer allergies. This figure reaches 30% in some areas. In order to control pollen allergies, aeromonitoring of irritant and toxic allergens is necessary.

Synsepal (Synsepalum dulciticum) is a mall tree which grows 4,5 m tall and is found in Nigeria and Ghana. Its fruit has a round stone which is surrounded by succulent sweet-and-sour flesh. Eating the fruit changes the taste of other foods, or the reaction of our taste buds which lasts for 3-5 hours. Things that normally taste too sour, bitter or bland, after eating synsepal fruit appear very tasty. This effect is caused by the complex glycoprotein called miraculin. The attempts to extract if from cultivated fruit turned out to be too expensive and the research into synthetic miraculin is being conducted. Miraculin could be beneficial for diabetics and people suffering from digestion diseases.
