The aim of the study was to determine the effect of melatonin treatment on the general state of health, skins, and fur quality of minks. The research was conducted on a farm consisting of 2500 minks of the basic pack and 12000 young minks. The experimental group contained 300 minks of the basic pack. In the middle of June an implant of synthetic melatonin (6 mg of Melakryl, produced in Russia) was inserted in the scapular bone region in each of those minks. The remainder of the minks of the basic pack represented the control group. Minks were fed with raw fish and poultry offal, cereal groats, meat-and-bone meal or fishmeal, vitamin and mineral supplements and plant oils. The diet guaranteed an average metabolic energy of about 1600 Kcal. The experimental minks were slaughtered in September, but the minks from control group in December. From 10 animals selected at random from each group blood samples were taken for hematology and biochemistry tests. From 5 minks from each group the visceral organs (liver, spleen, kidney) and brain samples were collected for histopathological examination. It was stated that minks with an implant of melatonin gained greater body weight and the fur maturation period was shorter by over two months, but the skins were thicker with sparser hair growth. Laboratory test results proved the favorable effect of melatonin treatment on liver enzymes, urea and creatynine level, as well as on reducing intensity of morphological changes of the liver, kidneys and spleen
The study aim was evaluation of the usefulness of several thermostable DNA polymerases in real time PCR conducted in the presence of the heme. Our study had the advantage of testing several different polymerases, one of which proved to be the least sensitive to heme activity. We also found that there is no need of supplementing the reaction mixture with protective substances like BSA. Selection of the appropriate polymerase can increase the efficiency of the PCR reaction which is very important for diagnosis of sepsis and for other analyses performed on DNA template isolated from the blood.
This study was aimed at monitoring the effect of melatonin implants on selected hematological and biochemical indices as well as on morphology changes of lungs, liver, spleen, kidneys and brain in minks. Experiments were carried out on 300 minks aged 2 years, bred under conditions of a large-herd farm and fed identical feedstuff. Melatonin implants were inserted subcutaneously to the minks in the form of granules containing 6 mg of melatonin. The control group consisted of minks from the basic herd. A better appetite and higher body weights characterized the experimental minks. Skins obtained were larger, thinner and covered with springy hair with a good sheen, yet were stragglier than in the control group. The hematological indices analyzed did not differ between the groups and were within referential values. Biochemical indices of liver and kidneys profiles were better in the experimental group. In the experimental minks, histopathological examinations demonstrated lesser intensity of disorders in brain and liver circulation, lesser intensity of degenerative lesions in liver tissues and kidneys as well as smaller infiltration of lymphocytic and plasmatic cells in lungs and liver.
The study was conducted at the “scanbrown” mink breeding farm. After weaning, the animals were divided into two groups, 50 units each (I treatment, II control). Both groups were fed a diet having an identical composition and energy level, but group I received a dietary preservative and antioxidant additives. Sodium pyrosulphite was added at a dose of 0.2-0.3% ready feed mass and Hadox antioxidant at a dose of 0.15-0.20 g per 1 kg ready feed until November. The slaughtered animals (10 units from each group) were subjected to postmortem and pathomorphological examinations. Histopathological examinations were carried out on sample specimens of the internal organs essential to the digestive and absorption processes and metabolism (stomach and duodenum, small intestine, large intestine, liver, kidneys). The feed preserved with sodium pyrosulphite and Hadox antioxidant did not show microbiological contamination at a level which would be hazardous to animal health. Supplementing the feed with a preservative and antioxidant resulted in a variation within the histopathological changes in the liver of both groups of animals. The kidneys were reported to show slight epithelium steatosis of the I order and convoluted tubules. No pathological changes were recorded in the images of the mink’s alimentary tract.
The aim of the study was to determine the etiological factors of an outbreak of cattle illness with symptoms nervous disorders. The disease appeared simultaneously in adult animals on three dairy farms between August and October. The majority of sick animals was after parturition and had high milk production. The diagnosis gene was found through clinical anatomopathology, histopathology and bacteriological examinations of the animals, as well as molecular, serological, virusological and chemical tests. L. monocytogenes was isolated from the brain tissue of the dead animals. Restriction analysis (PCR-RFLP) of the DNA fragment of the hly A gene from L. monocytogenes facilitated differentiation between the virulent and control strains. It was found that the copper and selenium levels in the cows' serum were reduced significantly. Additional examinations indicated the low content of these minerals in the forage.
