The species of the tenebrionid genus Stomylus Fåhraeus, 1870 (type species Stomylus bicolor Fåhraeus, 1870) (syn. Pselaphidion Gebien, 1920) within the tribe Diaperini are revised. Seven species are recognized as valid, distributed exclusively in Africa south of the Sahara and lacking in Madagascar. The diagnostic characters are figured (also by Scanning Electron Microscope), new distributional data are given and an identification key is compiled. New synonyms: Stomylus apicatus (Gebien, 1910) = Stomylus trituberculatus (Pic, 1926) syn. nov.; Stomylus nigronitens Gebien, 1920 = Stomylus loebli Ardoin, 1980 syn. nov.; Stomylus schroederi (Gebien, 1904) = Stomylus schroederi ssp. bimaculatus Ardoin, 1969 syn. nov. New combination: Diaclina gracilis ( Fåhraeus, 1870) comb. nov. from Stomylus.
Ten new species of the genus Laena Dejean, 1821 (Tenebrionidae: Lagriinae) are described from the Malayan Peninsula (L. benderaica sp. nov., L. jeraica sp. nov., L. kelantanica sp. nov., L. penangica sp. nov., L. tanahratica sp. nov.), Thailand (L. ellenae sp. nov.) and Laos (L. Ьгтгсжсгг sp. nov., L. geiseri sp. nov., L. kresli sp. nov., L. pacholatkoi sp. nov.). The aedeagus of L. champasaka is figured for the first time. Identification keys are added for the 18 species from Malaysia and for the 7 species from Laos; the species from Laos are mapped.
The species of the African genus Gargilius Fairmaire, 1891 (Tenebrionidae: Diaperinae) are revised. Two new species are described: G. apicalis sp. nov. (Democratic Republic of the Congo) and G. gebieni sp. nov. (Cameroon, Gabon, Ghana). The following species are placed in synonymy: G. bicornutus Fairmaire, 1891 (= G. incornutus Pic, 1916 syn. nov., = G. rectangularis Gebien, 1921 syn. nov.), G. rufitarsis Fairmaire, 1894 (= G. affinis Gebien, 1921 syn. nov., = Gargilius mocquerysi Pic, 1916 syn. nov.), G. trispinosus Fairmaire, 1891 (= G. rhodesianus Pic, 1916 syn. nov., = G. ancey Pic, 1926 syn. nov.). Lectotypes for Gargilius antilope Gebien, 1921, G. bicornutus Fairmaire, 1891, G. incornutus Pic, 1916, G. rectangularis Gebien, 1921, G. rufitarsis Fairmaire, 1894, G. affinis Gebien, 1921, G. mocquerysi Pic, 1916, G. rhodesianus Pic, 1916, G. anceyi Pic, 1926 are designated to fix the taxonomic status of these species. The representatives of Gargilius can be easily distinguished by the shape of the sexually dimorphic head and pronotum, in combination with a relatively stable elytral colour pattern. The genus is restricted to arboreal habitats of central and southeastern Africa.
Mariepskopia albomaculata gen. et sp. nov. from South Africa is described. The genus is placed into the tenebrionid tribe Cnodalonini and has no closer relative in Africa, but probably in the Oriental Region with the genus Asbolodes. The species has a small distribution area in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal and has probably an arboreal mode of life in the montane forest in 1300-1600 m altitude.
The Palaearctic species of the genus Metaclisa Jacquelin du Val, 1861 are revised. M. andoi sp. nov. is described from Yunnan Province, China. Androsus cyanescens Pic, 1934 syn. nov. is proposed as a synonym of Metaclisa atrocyanea (Lewis, 1891). An identification key for the 8 Palaearctic species is compiled. The genus has a transpalaearctic distribution with a huge disjunction: six species occur in the eastern part, and only two species in the western Palaearctic Region. The species have an arboreal way of life and are considered as indicators for old-growth forests.
Crypsis malgosiae sp. nov. from China (Sichuan) is described. New records of known species are presented, significantly expanding the known distribution of the genus (now 20 species). For most species photographs and drawings of the aedeagi are added for the first time to facilitate subsequent identifications.
Three new species of the genus Falsotithassa Pic, 1934 (Tenebrionidae: Lupropini) are described: Falsotithassa gigantea sp. nov. from Thailand and Laos, Falsotithassa sulawesica sp. nov. from Sulawesi and Falsotithassa thailandica sp. nov. from Thailand. Some new faunistical data of and taxonomie remarks to known species are added. At present, 10 species are recognized as valid within the genus, occurring exclusively in the Oriental region.
Taiwanocryphaeus erberi sp. nov. (Tenebrionidae: Toxicini), Tonkinius triplehorni sp. nov. (Tenebrionidae: Coelometopini) and Derosphaerus matthewsi sp. nov. (Tenebrionidae: Coelometopini), all from Sumatra, are described. It is discussed, why these taxa are not described as new genera, in spite of quite outstanding characters within the corresponding genera.
Pentaphyllus reibnitzi sp. nov. from Cyprus is described, representing the fourth species of Pentaphyllus from the western Palaearctic Region. All four species from this area are figured, a key for their identification and selected faunistic data are given. Two species have a wider distribution in the western Palaearctic Region, and two are restricted to limited areas in Azerbaijan or Cyprus, respectively. The type specimens of the new species were found in polypores, collected from a dead tree of Ficus carica in an extensively cultivated garden near seashore. Lectotype of Pentaphyllus nitidulus Reitter, 1884 is designated.
New data on the little-studied darkling beetle subfamily Phrenapatinae is given for the Afrotropical Region. The following new taxa are described and included into a key to the Phrenapatinae species of southern Africa: Archaeoglenes ruthmuelleraesp. nov. from the Republic of South Africa and the Republic of Mozambique, Endroeditagalusgen. nov.ongoyussp. nov. from the Republic of South Africa and Endroeditagalusgen. nov.ntsubanussp. nov. from the Republic of South Africa. New distributional data is incorporated into a checklist of the Afrotropical Phrenapatinae fauna.
A second species of the genus Zoutpansbergia Koch, 1956 (Z. schoemani sp. nov.) is described from the Limpopo Province in South Africa. Morphology of female terminalia of the studied genus is described for the first time. Systematic position of Zoutpansbergia within the subtribe Melambiina is briefly discussed. Lectotype for Zoutpansbergia serricostata Koch, 1956 is designated, in order to fix the taxonomic status of this species.
Lepidocaulinus gen. nov. and its type species L. mirabilis sp. nov. (Coleóptera: Tenebrionidae: Stenochiinae) are described from Thailand. The new genus is related to Pigeocaulinus Kaszab, 1984 (= Leprocaulinus Kaszab, 1982, not Leprocaulinus Uvarov, 1940), and to Hexarhopalus Fairmaire, 1891. Pigeocaulinus sumatranus Kaszab, 1984 is considered as a new synonym of Pigeocaulinus krikkeni (Kaszab, 1982). Neotype is designated for Pigeocaulinus sumatranus Kaszab, 1984.
Cossyphodes asiricus sp. nov. is described from an isolated relict mountainous forest in the Asir Mts. in south-western Saudi Arabia. This myrmecophilous species was found in a debris chamber of a Pheidole ant nest. It differs from the Palaearctic and adjacent Ethiopian congeners mainly by the development and orientation of the pronotal and elytral keels. Paramellon sociale was collected on the eastern side of the Arabian Peninsula in the United Arab Emirates in a completely different, but not isolated, and distinctly drier habitat. Both species are photographed, the localities are mapped, and some notes on biology and ecology are given.
