Studies were carried out on Thysanoptera of Roztocze. From 1987-1989 63 species were recorded, among them two species new to the Polish fauna: Pelikanothrips kratochvili and Thrips fulvipes.
The state of knowledge of Thysanoptera in Polish parts of the Sudety Mts. and the Carpathian Mts. is presented. Up to now 41 thrips species have been noted from the former and 125 from the latter mountain chain. From among 128 listed species Oxythrips tatricus is regarded as Carpathian endemic and Thrips trybomi, Haplothrips alpicola, H. alpestris, H. propinqus are connected with mountainous regions; additionally T. brevicornis and T. vulgatissimus have Boreo-Montane range.
New records of 38 thrips species occurring in the Sudety Mts. are presented. The data about their host plants are added. The most interesting species were as follows: Chirothrips ruptipennis, Haplothrips statices and Thrips roepkei which have been recorded for the first time in Polish mountains.
Thrips species composition and seasonal abundance was studied on maize crops during two seasons (2006-2007), in southeastern Poland. Altogether 21 species have been identified, among them Frankliniella tenuicornis (Uzel 1895) and Haplothrips aculeatus (Fabricius 1803) which are a graminicolous species and were eudominants, comprising 96.8% in 2006 and 82.0% in 2007 of all collected specimens. Other species occurred only in low numbers. The frequent and numerous presence of F. tenuicornis species in their immature stages in the samples, confirmed the role of the maize plant as the host. H. aculeatus probably chose maize as a food source and substitute plant for breeding.
We investigated whether high−intensity road traffic affects the nestbox occupancy pattern of secondary hole−nesting birds. Field studies were carried out in two forests in south−eastern Poland (Lasy Janowskie forest and Polichna forest). Both complexes were included in NATURA 2000 network. In our knowledge it was first field experiment on road−traffic noise influence on forest birds, conducted in the Polish environmental conditions. The results of this experiment can be used in work on the impact of road projects on forest birds. Nestboxes were hung at twelve linear transects located perpendicularly to the busy road and they were regularly inspected in 2011−2012. Road noise was measured by use of a digital measurer of sound level at each nestbox. Monitoring the activity of predators on the study area was done with the help of digital trail cameras and experiment with use of artificial nest with eggs. Noise level decreased with distance from the road. In the first year of experiment we observed that the birds settled preferentially habitats in the vicinity of road. However in next season the number of occupied nestboxes was independent from the distance from road. We found that the pressure caused by predators on the study area was very low, creating safer nesting places for birds. Our results provide evidence that these birds are well adapted to cope with anthropogenic noise. Some species of birds preferred nesting in neighbourhood of road.
