The ‘pontin’ translocation was obtained as a result of the recombination of segment from Thinopyrum ponticum with Lr19 gene, carrying resistance to leaf rust caused by Puccinia triticina, with chromosome segment of Thinopyrum intermedium, that contains Bdv2 gene that determines tolerance to Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus. Translocation ‘pontin’ is attractive for improvement of modern cultivars of common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The aim of the study was optimization of the set of molecular markers for selection of Polish breeding lines carrying ‘pontin’ translocation. We found that testing with AG15 and SCS265/253 markers is sufficient for tracing of the presence of ‘pontin’ translocation introduced from lines ER6, ER20, ER21, ER35 and IK33. As a result of the screening of over 1200 genotypes in 5 loci, lines carrying ‘pontin’ translocation were identified in materials from Choryn and Strzelce. The optimized system of selection is significant for cumulating resistance genes in selected genotypes.
Field experiments were carried out near Kraków (Poland), between 1999 and 2001, with nine crops (red beet, field pumpkin, chicory, common bean, barley, white cabbage, maize, alfalfa, common parsnip) to determine zinc and copper accumulation and their distribution in the plants’ tissues. Based on the results, species suitable for phytoremediation were selected. Field pumpkin and red beet were characterized by the highest zinc accumulation, especially in the leaves (119.14 and 64.97 mg·kg⁻¹ d. w. respectively). In the case of alfalfa, field pumpkin, and barley the maximum Cu content was found in the roots (35.81, 25.74, 15.92 mg·kg⁻¹ d. w. respectively). The field pumpkin, chicory, and red beet were characterized by the highest zinc concentration ratios (shoots/roots): 2.8, 2.2, 2.0. Concentration ratios for copper were within the range: 0.1 (barley) – 1.4 (common parsnip).
Field experiments were carried out from 1999 to 2001 with nine crops (red beet, field pumpkin, chicory, common bean, barley, white cabbage, maize, alfalfa and common parsnip) to determine the cadmium and lead accumulation and distribution in the plants' organs. Based on the obtained results, species suited for phytoremediation were selected. Within the red beet, field pumpkin, chicory, common bean, white cabbage and parsnip the maximum Cd and Pb content was found in leaves. The red beet was characterized by the highest cadmium concentration ratio (shoots/roots). The red beet and common parsnip were characterized by the highest lead concentration ratios (shoots/roots). The phytoremediation efficiency of the investigated crops depended on the biomass production and the possibility of metal accumulation in harvestable organs.
The possibilities of using nine crops (Beta vulgaris, Cichorium intybus, Cucurbita pepo, Phaseolus vulgaris, Hordeum vulgare, Brassica oleracea var. capitata, Zea mays, Medicago sativa, and Pastinaca sativa) in removing metals from soil were investigated in field trials from 1999 to 2001. The aim of the study was to determine the efficiency of nine cultivated plant species in removing cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, lead, and zinc from soil. The most effective ones in cadmium, manganese, copper, nickel, lead and zinc remediation were - Cucurbita pepo; chromium - Zea mays; iron - Medicago sativa. The phytoremediation efficiency of the investigated crops depended both on biomass production and on the possibility of metal accumulation in tissues.
