In order to evaluate the impacts of a motor vessel after installing wind sails, the aerodynamics of the sail should be accurately calculated. However most of the research on sails are based on stable wind instead of natural wind which is changing horizontally and vertically. In this paper wind tunnel tests are carried out based on stable wind field and simulated natural wind field, the results shown that there are 16–44% decrease in natural wind in terms of lifting coefficient and 11–42% decrease for drag coefficient. This would provide a valuable reference to the effectiveness evaluation of the impact of sails for sail assisted ships
A new montmorillonite/humic acid complex preparation method in the alkaline environment was studied by experiment, and the complex effect on remediation of heavy metal pollution was verified. The best technological condition of the montmorillonite/humic acid complex preparation in alkaline environment was that the mass ratio between montmorillonite and humic acid was 100:3, the reaction solution was 0.01 mol/L sodium nitrate solution, the pH value of the reaction solution was 8.5, and the reaction time was 24 hours. The complex has better remediation effect on cadmium waste water. The cadmium adsorption capacity of the complex was 18.96 mg/g, and the pH value ranges of cadmium waste water suited for the complex was from 5 to 9.
Excessive trafficking of leukocytes can lead to serious tissue injury. Here, four regioselectively sulfated chitosans were assessed as inhibitors of HL-60 leukocyte binding to P-selectin, by investigating their effect on leukocyte adhesion to CHO cells expressing human P-selectin under static and flow conditions. The results show that the sulfochitosans exhibit inhibitory activity in this general order: heparin > N-sulfated/6-O-sulfated chitosan ≥ 3-O,6-O-sulfated chitosan > 6-O-sulfated chitosan ≫ N-sulfated chitosan. This suggests that the sulfation of the double site in chitosan is essential for efficient inhibition of P-selectin-mediated HL-60 leukocyte adhesion and that such sulfochitosans may have potential as therapeutic agents against inflammatory disease.
This research investigates the spatial and temporal trend analysis of precipitation time series. Precise predictions of precipitation trends can play an imperative role in economic growth of a country. This study examined precipitation inconsistency for 23 stations at Dongting Lake, China, over a 52-year study period (1961-2012). Statistical, nonparametric Mann- Kendall (MK) and Spearman’s rho tests were applied to identify trends within monthly, seasonal, and annual precipitation. The trend-free pre-whitening method was used to exclude sequential correlation in the precipitation time series. The performance of the Mann-Kendall (MK) and Spearman’s rho tests was steady at the tested significance levels. The results showed a fusion of increasing and decreasing trends at different stations within monthly and seasonal time scales. The results obtained with the Mann-Kendall and Spearman’s rho tests showed agreement in their assessments of monthly, seasonal, and annual precipitation trends. The variability of negative and positive trends at various stations points to the need for more detailed studies on the climate change of this region. In the case of whole Dongting basin on the monthly time scale, a significant positive trend is found, while at Yuanjiang River and Xianjiag River both positive and negative significant trends are identified. Only Yuanjiang River has shown a significant trend on the seasonal time scale. No significant trends have been exhibited on the annual time scale in any case. In the case of monthly, Nanxian station exhibited the maximum positive increase in monthly precipitation during the months of July and September. In the case of seasonal, only Tongren station showed a positive trend on the monthly level, and no significant negative trends were detected in both spring and autumn seasons.
The distribution of and prediction models for heavy metals in wheat were evaluated in Tianjin, China. The results indicated that there were high heavy metal concentrations (Zn, Cd, Cu, Pb, Cr, and Ni) in the wheat and that the Cd concentration (0.062mg·kg-1) in the seeds actually exceeded the national safety standard. The accumulation factors for the wheat’s seeds were of a decreasing order: Zn>Cd>Cu>Pb>Cr>Ni. The Cd concentration in the wheat’s seeds corresponded closely with the Cd concentration in the soil (r = 0.74). The predicting model was appropriate for predicting the concentration of Cd and Zn in wheat, and the r was 0.735 and 0.625, respectively.
Ecological risks of heavy metal toxicity such as Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, As, and Hg through crops (wheat and rice) grown in the Tianjin sewage irrigation area in northern China were studied in this paper. Wheat and rice samples as well as related soil samples from 77 select blocks were collected. The second grade of standards for Tianjin soil environmental quality was used for soil risk assessment. Chinese National Food Safe Criterion was used for health risk assessment of wheat and rice grains. Daily intake rate and Target hazard quotient were used for the potential health risk assessment of local population through the intake of wheat and rice grown in the sewage-irrigated site. The results showed that continuous application of wastewater has led to accumulation of heavy metals in the soil, and Cd, Zn, and Hg were the main pollutants. Zn and Cd were more mobile than other metals. Pb in wheat and rice had an ecological risk to human health. As and Hg in some rice samples as well as Cd, Zn, and As in some wheat samples had potential risk. Target hazard quotient (THQ) of individual metal was below 1.0, meaning the relative absence of health risks associated with intake of a single heavy metal through intake of either wheat or rice. THQs of As for wheat and rice would sum up to above 1.0, indicating As may pose a risk to the local population by intake of wheat and rice.
Diallyl disulfide (DADS) is a major constituent of garlic. Previously, we found that DADS both inhibited proliferation in human gastric cancer cells in vitro and in vivo, and induced G2/M arrest. In this study, we investigated whether this differentiation effect was induced by DADS in human gastric cancer MGC803 cells, and whether it was related to an alteration in ERK activity. The results showed that the growth of MGC803 cells was inhibited by DADS. Cells treated with DADS displayed a lower nucleocytoplasmic ratio and tended to form gland and intercellular conjunction structures. The ConA-mediated cell agglutination ratio and cells’ ALP specific activity decreased. In MGC803 cells, dye transfer was limited to a few cells neighbouring the dye-injected cell and to a depth of 1–2 layers beneath the scrape site. However, after treatment with DADS, the LY (Lucifer Yellow) was transferred to several cells immediately neighbouring the microinjected cell and to a depth of 2–4 cell layers from the scrape site. This indicated that DADS induced differentiation in MGC803 cells. Western blot analysis revealed that although DADS did not influence the quantity of ERK1/2 protein expressed, it did decrease its phosphorylation in a concentration-dependent manner, compared with the controls. At 30 mg·L−1, DADS inhibited the activation of ERK1/2 in 15–30 min. These results suggested that the DADS-induced differentiation of MGC803 cells involved an alteration of the ERK1/2 signaling pathway.
