The work analyses the possibility, need and purposefulness of extending the present use of random drainage systems on the lowland areas of Poland. The basis of the performed analysis were the results of stud ies carried out in the years 1976-1985 in the Chair of Agricultural and Forest Ameliorations of the Agricultural University in Poznań. The analysis has shown that random drainage system should be widely applied on the richly sculptured post-glacial areas covering a significant part of Poland. The work points out that the present principles valid in soil investigations for water melioration purposes and the obligatory drainage instructions are the basic reasons inhibiting the possibility of a wider application of random drainage systems. The necessity of improving this situations has been indicated. In the conclusion, the work presents a proposal of guidelines for the designing of random drainage systems on wary mOrainic areas.
