A new species of bat in the Hipposideros bicolor group, found in a very restricted area in Central Laos, is described. The new bat is very similar in general body size and shape to H. rotalis, a species whose distribution includes the known range of the new species. However the new species differs noticeably in the size of the noseleaf, rostral chambers, skull structures related to sound emission or reception, frontal skull width, and echolocation frequency. Both species are superficially very similar to H. orbiculus and H. ridleyi, from the Malayan peninsula, Borneo, and Sumatra, which had been considered sibling species of H. rotalis, perhaps implying vicariant speciation involving the Isthmus of Kra. The new species resembles H. orbiculus in its smaller internarial septum, and the echolocation frequency is also similar, but skull traits clearly ally H. orbiculus with H. ridleyi, which is sympatric with it in peninsular Malaysia. Molecular systematic analyses of cytochrome b nucleotide sequences of a sample of species in the H. bicolor group support the sister status between the new species and H. rotalis. However, H. ridleyi does not join the latter two in a monophyletic group, apparently having evolved similar morphology and echolocation convergently from a different ancestor.
The Afrotropical leaf-nosed bat Hipposideros caffer has been traditionally regarded as a complex of populations, currently pertaining to two recognized cryptic species, H. caffer and H. ruber. Extent of distribution and morphological variation of these bats has raised concerns over whether the current perception of the complex reflects true phylogenetic relationships and taxonomic diversity. Our phylogenetic analysis of nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene challenged the hypothesis of two cryptic species. Instead of the two reciprocally monophyletic lineages expected, corresponding to the two species, we recovered four distinct lineages with deep internal divergences. Two sister clades within a lineage of bats of H. caffer represent respectively the nominotypical form H. c. caffer, restricted to Southern Africa, and H. c. tephrus, inhabiting the Maghreb, West Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Geographical isolation and deep genetic divergence suggest species status of both the forms. Another lineage comprises specimens of both morphotypes from West and East Africa. It probably represents a distinct species but its taxonomic assignation remains obscure. A Central African lineage of H. ruber comprises two sister clades, which become sympatric in Cameroon. Their status has to be clarified with additional evidence, since nuclear gene flow might be taking place. A further divergent lineage with H. ruber morphotype, most probably representing another distinct species, is restricted to West Africa. Although all three genetic forms of H. ruber may correspond to named taxa, their proper taxonomic assignation has to be assessed by comparison with type material.
Kerivoula kachinensis is reported for the first time from Cambodia, Lao PDR and Thailand. In April, 2005 and January, 2006, three individuals were collected in deciduous dipterocarp forest, near bamboo, in the Seima Biodiversity Conservation Area, Mondul Kiri Province, Cambodia. In September, 2007, two individuals were collected in lower montane forest, which included some mixed deciduous forest, bamboo groves and banana trees, in the hills of Phu Suan Sai National Park, Loei Province, and a single individual was collected in mixed deciduous forest, near bamboo, in the Nam Nao National Park, Petchabun Province, Thailand. In 1996–1998, seven specimens were collected from five localities in north, central and southern Lao PDR; most were associated with evergreen forest at altitudes between 150–800 m a.s.l. The species appears to be relatively widespread in continental Southeast Asia. Locally common, it is probably not currently at risk.
