Twenty new synonyms are proposed for four species of Ceratopogonidae: Atrichopogon rostratus (Winnertz, 1852), Bezzia annulipes (Meigen, 1830), Dasyhelea flavifrons (Guérin, 1833) and Dasyhelea saxicola (Edwards, 1929). Atrichopogon transversalis Kieffer, 1918, A. ventralis Kieffer, 1918, A. homopterus Kieffer, 1919, A. coracellus Kieffer, 1919 and A. nigriventris Kieffer, 1919 are junior synonyms of Ceratopogon rostratus Winnertz, 1852. Bezzia digramma Kieffer, 1925 is junior synonym of Ceratopogon annulipes Meigen, 1830. Dasyhelea geleiana Zilahi-Sebess, 1931, D. tecticola Remmert, 1953 and D. karelica Glukhova et Brodskaya, 1997 are junior synonyms of Tetraphora saxicola Edwards, 1929. Culicoides karajevi Dzhafarov, 1961 is treated as a junior synonym of Culicoides semimaculatus Clastrier, 1958.
Larvae and pupae of Macropeza albitarsis MEIGEN, 1818 are described and illustrated for the first time. Aquatic larvae with a paddle-like anal segment armed with dorsal and ventral broom hairs are good swimmers. Within the family, larvae of the genus Macropeza MEIGEN, 1818 are unique in having broom hairs on the anal segment and a pair of multiple setae p on the head.
The two European species of vertebrate blood-feeding biting midges of the subgenus Lasiohelea Kieffer, 1921 of the genus Forcipomyia Meigen, 1918 are taxonomically reviewed. They are Forcipomyia (Lasiohelea) velox (Winnertz, 1852), whose adult females feed on amphibians, and F. (L.) sibirica (Buyanova, 1962), which obtain blood from humans. Adults of both species are diagnosed, redescribed and illustrated. Forcipomyia sibirica is a boreo-montane Palearctic species which, in Europe, mostly occurs in mountain areas, and is very similar to the eastern Palearctic F. (L.) nipponica (Tokunaga, 1940). Forcipomyia velox is common in western Palearctic lowlands. Forcipomyia (L.) cultella (Yu et Xiang, in Yu 1988) from China is recognized as a junior synonym of F. velox (Winnertz, 1852), and F. (L.) ussurica Remm, 1971 from the Russian Far East is recognized as a junior synonym of F. (L.) longicornis (Tokunaga, 1940) from Japan. New synonymies. Forcipomyia sibirica from Romania and F. longicornis from North Korea are reported for the first time.
Forcipomyia sahariensis Kieffer, 1923 is diagnosed in all stages. Larvae and pupae reared from rotting roots are described for the first time. Forcipomyia tuzeti Huttel et Huttel, 1952 from France and F. acanthophora Remm in Havelka, 1976 from Germany are recognized as new junior synonyms of F. sahariensis. A supplemented key for identification of known larvae and pupae of Polish species of the subgenus Forcipomyia s. str. is also provided.

These species represent the following faunal elements: Afrotropical (Dasyhelea flava CARTER, INGRAM et MACFIE, 1921), meridional (eremial) Palaearctic (D. alboverrucosa REMM, 1967, D. punctiventris GOETGHEBUER, 1940), west Palaearctic (D. arenivaga MACFIE, 1943), arboreal Holarctic (D. bifida ZILAHI-SEBESS, 1936) and arboreal Palaearctic (D. turficola KIEFFER, 1925).
